Ships in the night (or day)

There has been so much rain recently that even when the weather has been sunny I haven't wanted to go across the fields as the paths are waterlogged. This morning my husband decided he needed a run so I had the incentive to get out of the door.

It was warm ( for the time of year ;) ) around 8 or 9C and the wind was behind us. Mr Y has had some issues which stopped him running recently so we didn't want to go too far, just 3km or so. It was good to be out.

We followed our normal route. Lately there have been sheep in the first field we come to but they didn't seem to be there. We speculated that they may have ended up as Christmas dinners.

The route was as muddy as I'd anticipated, so had to do a bit of unplanned Jeffing (good idea that) as I really didn't fancy going head over heels, it was that slippery. We turned back after 1.5 km and I decided to run along the other side of the sheep field (you guessed, another attempt at a pi run of 3.14 km) to make up the distance.

My husband called, 'Look, ship'. If we lived anywhere else this would be a bit odd, but the field lies parallel to the river and at high tide we can see masts. I looked, but didn't see anything. I asked where the ship was. I forgot, he has a very slight accent which is all but imperceptible apart from a few words. When our eldest was a baby my Mum went on a cruise and he drew a lovely picture of her on a sheep after Daddy told him where she was. You guessed it, the sheep were hiding in a different part of the field. Silly me. You can just about see them at the top right of the field in the picture.

(I didn't manage to hit 3,14 km, it jumped to 3.15 before I could hit stop on the NRC app).

Well done to you both! It is very muddy at the moment isn’t it, but that view looks well worth it. Must be fun seeing ship’s masts pop up in the distance 😊😊😊.

In the summer it can be beautiful, sailing boats crossing the horizon over the green fields...not long to go now 🤞 (relatively ;) )

Looks like a fabulous place to run. Mud makes the whole thing more of an adventure!

Yes, running in the mud brings its own challenges 😂

I loved reading this post, and that’s a super photo. I’m glad you’re still attempting your pi runs-I had one the other day unexpectedly and thought of you!

It adds a little challenge at the end of a 3km run - can I judge the difference in distance between the Garmin and NRC distances to hit 3.14km? Easier said than done :)

Update: he now tells me he was warning me not to step in some .... ;)

Ship? Sheep? No difference at all! Glad you’re managing to get out - it’s more than I’ve been doing! It’s been so wet underfoot! I hope you and MrY have a good New Year!

I've decided I really don't like mud. It has no redeeming features. It's messy and cold and isn't even pretty like snow.

Happy New Year to you too :)

ohhh, can’t wait to read about any redeeming feature of mud in the book I’m reading now. I have a feeling it will feature on our walking challenge this year ( over at Active 10 at healthunlocked.com/active10... )

I seem to remember mud has quite a few redeeming features which we will have to explore, methinks. Maybe we still need to learn to love mud? A mud run anyone?

Great post, great photo! I’m reminiscing now about my muddiest runs …. 🤔🥹😁😏💭💬💭

I went to a very upmarket sauna/spa in central London and one of the treatments was a mud face mask. It smelt just like our glorious Essex mud. Didn't tempt me to try and DIY .

PI plus .01 I guess doesn't quite have the same ring to it, I'm glad you found the sheep, they'd probably only be good for mutton stew anyway . And oh dear, one step closer to vegetarianism for me, lamb doesn't get through the door here anyway (My maths is rubbish so if the plus .01 is incorrect forgive me)

Your maths is spot on SueAppleRun :) The sheep are on the large side, but it looks like they are leading a happy life. For those of us who eat meat there is no harm remembering it actually comes from animals. I try and avoid intensively reared meat, battery chickens etc but don't have much problem with lamb as it tends to be reared in places that aren't used for much else (this land is between arable crops so I'm guessing the sheep will be improving the soil).

Yes they will and yes you are right, I eat some meat but have vegan family so I feel a bit guilty at times, I'm sure the sheep are happy. I don't cope well with eggs being brought up on a poultry farm but just think how many chickens we'd have around if no one ste eggs.I'm glad my maths was ok, I'm very tentative with numbers because I don't understand them.

My vegan daughter in law has started occasionally eating meat again (maybe only temporarily), just as I was learning some decent vegan recipes. Still, at least she introduced me to nutritional yeast though I sort of feel like an imposter when I use it 😂

Nutritional yeast is delicious, sprinkle it on all sorts of things whether I need it or not
