Strength training for old runners

Following on from my post the other day about age and running . . . apart from the importance of rest and recovery days, building and particularly maintaining strength seems also to be very important. I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions of any online resources or books about this that are specifically for runners over 60? I don't really want to sign up for a paid subscription to a long course of videos and I couldn't really find much in the way of books on Amazon either. Any suggestions or recommendations would be most welcome - thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

A really good idea. That video was very useful.

Loads of links online. Free

I use a lot of Body Fit with Amy on YouTube... low impact for me... exercises that avoid mat work, but focus on every part of the body. Many do not require equipment.

There are many short duration exercises which are so easy to put into a regular routine. I do them on many days when I am not running, Arms, legs, abs ( standing exercises).

I have a 30 to 50 minute routine which links many of them together. I have a set of hand weights which I do use with some of them. ( Not essential).

healthunlocked.com/strength...

Many exercises also, linked in the Strength and Flex Forum.

Including one post, I did a while ago.. I was 65 when I started C25K...72 now and still using loads of these exercises... the ankle ones are really great too as we get more seasoned:)

There are lots of seated exercise too, if folk feel the need...and they are as impacting as other exercise.

Even the low impact and shorter duration exercises, done properly and regularly, do leave you feeling that your workout has been worthwhile.

A few years back, after an MRI scan for a suspected issue, the results showed that leg wise, knees etc, apart from a very slight tear in the meniscus( which apparently most folk over 35 have anyway) ...they were in great condition! I have always, had a health age of a much younger person, totally down to running and the accompanying exercises.

I use YouTube on my telly. Loads there. I donโ€™t restrict myself to over 60โ€™s though, I followed Joe Wicks PE for kids and loved it ๐Ÿ˜ƒ. Nike Training Club has loads of choice too. Thereโ€™s an Irish lady on there who does easy to follow hand weight sessions. Yoga for runners on there and the fab yoga guy Tamal Dodge. Joe Wicks has senior strength sessions on there too. All free too ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ˜€
