Well! Who was listening to radio 4 early yesterday morning?? Dr Michael Moseley was extolling the virtues of beetroot for runners and others doing extreme exercise.... That's us of course! So....who drinks/eats it specifically for energy boosts? Apparently you need to have it approximately 2 hours before your long runs...if I run at 6am that means drinking it neat at 4!don't think I can do that and I have to run when it's cooler. I want to give it a go tho. Worth listening to him.

Yes, I heard that! I've been drinking beetroot juice for a while now - don't know if it helps, but it makes me feel virtuous 😇.You should hear his next episode (I think you must be listening to repeats 🤔) on eccentric exercises! Who knew that running downhill could be so good for you 😅💪

I absolutely love beetroot juice and could drink the whole carton in one go - but I resist! Haven’t bought it for a while actually, but it’ll go back on my shopping list this week. Yum. 😋
Beetroot are fantastic! Beetroot smoothies are great... and although I really don't like cake or chocolate, I do enjoy a beetroot and chocolate one that I have had the recipe for, for yonks!
I used to have a recipe for that and then moved on to chocolate and red kidney beans!

I’ve recently started drinking it ‘Beet It’ bought from Sainsbury’s. It tastes good - there is some apple juice in it to counterbalance the earthy beet flavour. Can’t say if it helping with running but it makes me feel like I am being healthy. Give it a go 🙂

I listened to that as well (on BBC Sounds, about a week ago) and husband and as a result I have been eating/drinking so much beetroot....Since then I've had a couple of runs where it's definitely felt easier and maybe I've been a bit faster. Husband got another PB at Parkrun, beating his previous PB by nearly a minute and a half (he's been eating even more of them than me) so maybe there's something in it. My Parkrun time was the best this year. I definitely seem to feel less tired afterwards.
Regarding the pre run morning beetroot, my alarm goes at 7am and I don't normally leave the house until around 9, so I've got this plan that I'm going to pour a glass of beetroot juice tonight and cover it with clingfilm, then knock it back when the alarm goes off. I'll then have a snooze for an hour or so and see how my run goes. I'll report back if I manage this
Golly! Impressive if your extra energy is due to the juice. I want to be out the door by 7!
I'm not an early bird like you Mormor1 , one of the joys of semi retirement is that I can ignore the alarm these days
In the winter I can run later but I get too hot from spring on.....and come out in hives!
I prefer winter runs too, missing my below zero dashes through the snowy forests ❄️❄️🏃♀️❄️❄️
Can't believe o did my mom and only 10 miles... In June! I did the last 3k along the beach and just fell in at the end... Taking antihistamines before I run now helps. I love the summer. But not for running 🏃.
For longsr runs, I aim to leave a couple of hours between having a drink and setting off so there's an opportunity to try out the BJ there. Have some in the fridge so will give it a go.
I love all things beetroot! I grow all kinds of the stuff 🤓 and make all kinds of things with it. My allotment pal gave me a definitive work on this miracle veg. He saw it in a book shop on holiday and thought of me ☺️
I eat it every day either fresh or pickled so hopefully I’ve got a cumulative effect going on 💪🙂.
I listened as well, and as a 7 am runner, wondered about the timing. Would it still be effective if drunk at bedtime?
I do intend trying it in my late morning lumpy veggie unsmoothie to see if it helps me through the mid afternoon snoozy low.
Just bear in mind that beetroot is sugar beet! I’d eat it whole rather than juicing it in the interest of preserving my teeth 😁.
