I could not find anyone to do this event with me but did have Mr Shakes to keep me company from the stands (he is a season ticket holder so was quite at home). The event was a new one for the calendar so no one really knew what to expect, but we were promised close roads and a stadium finish. The route was nothing to write home about (I didn’t take my phone out to take a picture once!) as it was mostly on duel carriageways and residential streets and inevitably there were a few cars about as not everyone appreciated having their road closed for 2 hours on a Sunday. But it was nice to walk round the stadium at pitch level before we set off and to finish in front of the stands.
The route was undulating and I really appreciated the long downhill start. I was jeffing (5 min run and 2 min walk) but ran the first 12 mins as it was all down hill. The timing also got a little out on a particularly stinky rise at about 5k. I appreciated the gentleman playing the steel drums just before the half way mark and the park we ran around the outside of looked rather nice, what a pity they could not find a path on the inside of the railings.
I still have not solved the problem of how to carry jelly babies so was starting to feel a little weary as we reached the last km but was able to summon my energy for a speedy sprint for the line (although on Mr Shakes video it does not look like I’m going very fast). I was happy with my time (my second fastest 10k - think I have only run that distance 4 times) and with the fact that I did not feel to bad at the end. To be honest I quite enjoyed it. Next one is early May, and I am back with friends, in London, lots of photo opportunities there so may be I can run between the landmarks and not walk at all.
Really excited by the professional photo as I have ‘flying feet’ and the bling is nice too.
