After suffering bad cold?

Have reached a point of running for 40 minutes three times a week. But then I got the first cold I had for 3 years. It resulted in a really bad chesty cough and I’ve not run for 2 weeks.

I’m now feeling well enough to start again but unsure whether I need to try carrying on as before with the 40 minutes or start a different shorter period of running?

I would say, just go out and run and see how far you can COMFORTABLY run. No speed run, just a calm and easy SLOW run. Aim for 40 minutes, but stop when you feel your body protesting. Afterwards you can eg. build up from there again with 5 minutes extra per week?

Thank you very much for the great advice. I’ll aim for the 40 minutes but see how it goes. I’ve been spoiled having been in Southern France for a month where it’s been warm and dry. Back in UK from Tuesday and will start up from then.

You won't loose much fitness in the first 2 weeks , but just go out for a no pressure gentle run .It dosent need to be 40 minutes.

Just do what you are comfortable with without pushing it .

Thank you. Good to know that the fitness won’t fall off a cliff after only two weeks. Will take it easy and see how it feels.

Went out on Friday at 7:15 wrapped up warm as it was very cold. Ran easy for 20 minutes before turning round and heading home. After another 10 minutes, started getting some discomfort in my right knee. So stopped running and walked the rest of the way home. Did my stretches and then showered. Had covered 5.8 km including the walking bit. Knee feels a little stiff but not painful. Will rest the weekend and then go for a run on Monday with a knee guard. At the start of any discomfort I will stop.

Just thought I’d update my position following my last post. I wore a knee bandage and took my next run very slowly. Happy to say ran 40 minutes and no trace of knee discomfort.

Then had a few more runs with the knee bandage and then did some runs without it and still no pain.

Then missed a week as we went down to Bristol to see rellies. Wasn’t possible to go out at all but when we got back to York on Thursday, hopped put of bed at 07:15 on Friday, really keen to get running again. Having missed a week, I set off slowly and only ran for 30 minutes but it felt ok. So, from next week, aiming to do 3 runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of 5,6 and 10km respectively. Really miss running when I can’t go out but can’t honestly say that I always look forward to it, especially at 07:00 on a cold, wet morning.😀
