Better than walking

This morning I finished repeating C25K after a year mostly on the IC. So Week 9 Run 3 ... er ... somehow turned into a 10K. 🤣

My running route includes a 4 km loop. I felt very comfy after 5K, and I know it can't be Christmas EVERY day but I wanted W9R3 to be special, so I just did another circuit and then waited for my watch to ping me at 10K.

A few mini adventures - at 4 km my shoelace came undone and I lost my rhythm after I stopped to retie it. Then my house key which was in a zipped chest pocket was chafing painfully as my shirt was soaked through - so I relocated it to the zipped back pocket of my trousers. At 8 km the front of my right foot was getting painfully sore - it's been a while since I ran for an hour - so I tried to concentrate on heel strikes for the rest of the run. Probably why I slowed down a bit.

I know the route very well and I calculated I would reach 10K just by the start of my favourite walk back home, which happened pretty much inch perfect.

My legs felt a bit funny for a minute or so when I stopped running, and when I do warm down stretches I usually feel nothing, but this time I could feel my calf muscles when I stretched them.

As I've found with these slower runs, I can't even tell I've been for a run today. I did sweat a LOT and had a problem with sweat running into my eyes. I have ordered some hot weather running gear which should be here before my next longer run. I'm thinking I should also get an alice band or something to stop the sweat running down into my eyes.

This was my second outing in a new pair of Nike Pegasus 38 trainers and they were excellent. I didn't even notice them while I was running which I think may be the best thing you can say about a pair of shoes?

I am greatly enjoying this slower running. In my head I'm thinking "I'm just out for a bit of a run, and it's better than walking!"

Well done !BUT , after a year on the injury couch I'm not sure running 10k was wise ?

You don't want another year on the couch

Thank you for the caution. 👍I cannot argue with the sense of what you say. However, this time through C25K, and quite unlike the first time, I have had zero aches and pains and no soreness and stiffness. I'm also running around 7 / km instead of the 5:30 / km I was running all of the time before. Not going to go any faster until I've lost at least a stone, which I think will take me until some time in September. On my rest days I do a fast hike up to 20 km which I think is helping. 🤞

You won't necessarily get any warning of an overuse injury , It happens, then it's too late

Yep - that has happened to me several times in the past - though at much higher levels of effort in my running. The pace I am going at now feels like an extension of walking.

You have just made my point for me !I would suggest following the 10% rule

Thanks for your wise advice. I do really appreciate it. After two years of trial and error I think I've learned something about my legs and how they behave. My gait is transformed from what it used to be and I will never run when my legs are tired. When I reached 10K today it felt like I could keep going all day.
