Well, what happened to all that dry weather? It is May isn't it? Hands up, who put their winter running gear away at the end of April and has had to get it out again? Me for one! Ah well, we really should know better π However, to be honest, I do find running in the rain quite life affirming. It adds a little frisson to a run, it feels a little bit naughty and a little bit like being a kid again when you're running through puddles and you come in soaked through, squelching into the hall. It is also a very good idea to run in this weather: who knows what weather we'll have throwing itself against us when races start again (and it's looking promising for this in the UK!), so it's best to train in everything. It's not just your body but also your head that needs to train for this stuff. But then again, if you're on the Bridge then you've probably already done this throughout the winter and would just like it to let up for once!!
My hill training has had a few hiccups: I had to recover from a little hamstring strain and then I had jab no.2 on Saturday, so my Sunday long run was postponed. I wasn't at all jealous of Katnap as he popped out for a quick 5 miles last night...no, not at all!! Never mind, my run this morning was good if a little higher in heart rate than usual. Doing a little more yoga, particularly some core work, to make up for the reduced mileage but hopefully the miles will come back as the week moves on.
Thank you to all those who have sent their Quests in so far. We've had fun reading through them and replying. Let us know below how you're getting on. If you haven't yet signed up, don't worry, you can join at any time with the words *'I would like to join the Quest, or, count me in! I want to ...'*
Here's a reminder of what this is about:
What is the Quest?
The aim of the Quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.
We may find at this time that we really need to focus on what we can reasonably do, and where and when we can do it!
The Quest takes one calendar month. You can join at any point during that time.
Some popular goals are:
β To run three times a week
β To slowly increase distance
β To train for a specific race
β To add Stretch and Strength exercises to your weekly routine
Most of all: *make it achievable, make it fun and make it feel good!*
This wonderful 'Running' thing has helped us all through these testing times and look at all the wonderful things we potentially have coming up as the restrictions start to relax (π€π€π€). Time to get planning!

Is it week 2 already, how did that happen! 3.8km walk-run for me this morning, along a very windy seafront followed by my physioβs hip exercises. So Iβm sticking to my Quest targets - so far so good!
This month's quest has all gone out the window. The "niggle" isn't going away in spite of me resting it for four days. I have booked a physio appointment for Monday morning. Until I get a professional opinion, I'm keeping a place warm on the IC.
Iβm still trying to chip away at my times TC. I was meant to add JRS to my (not) PR on Friday, but didnβt - but I got a PB which was a nice surprise. Iβll do a JRS session either tomorrow or Thursday, I havenβt forgotten, promise. Iβm sure itβs helping! My next goal is sub 33. ππ₯
Oh, and Iβve done some googling (I know) and it looks like I may have damaged a sesamoid bone in my foot. All the symptoms match up, but fortunately itβs only a problem during yoga moves that involve bending the big toe in a certain way. No pain running or walking at all. Thatβll teach me to do HIIT barefoot one week, then stub the toe then next! ππ
Youβre doing amazingly with JRS cheeky! I know youβve got some speed in there, youβve certainly put the ground work in.
Sorry to hear about your foot - HIIT workouts can be lethal! I hurt my toe with Joe Wicks last year which is why I never do burpees at home anymore. Did you do it on carpet? Seems to be a bit no-no. At least itβs not affecting your running. I hope it heals quickly π€
No, but worse - on the patio with just a thin yoga mat! π€¦ββοΈ What was I thinking? π€£
At least I can still run. I was concerned I wouldnβt be able to, especially after stubbing the same toe trying to score a goal in Crocs against my grandson (again, π€¦ββοΈ) but itβs fine. I wouldnβt be a happy bunny otherwise. π
Oh no! Ouch, ouch, ouch!! And why do we always hit the same bit over and over again!! Not fair is it? Katnap does that a lot! I take it you didnβt score either?! π
I loved seeing this photo and post as my first run last week was in the rain. It felt great to actually step out the door when it was already raining rather than get caught in it! So that made me feel really proud of myself fir giving the motivation gremlins a good bashing! Long run on Sunday was 8k - longest since before Xmas so I'm very pleased with that too! Still not 3 runs but it's better than 1!!!
Oh good for you Fiona! Well done! ππ Youβll get there Iβm sure - and if you can get out in what the weather is throwing at us at the moment, itβs a dead cert πππ
Last weeks quest went well. I managed 4 runs in total - 2 back to back of 3k each, 5K (a bit meh) and much better 7K on Sunday.
Have been on a trail run this morning, giving the Saucony shoes their first outing. Apart from getting lost and a bit of walking (and hauling my carcass over lots of stiles) it was a glorious day and the shoes were fab (should never doubted them!!).
Carpets of bluebells and a herd of deer (very common on my runs - just hoping one day I don't get trampled on by them) completed todays sightings.
Not sure what my plans are for running the rest of the week, I have quite a lot on work wise so might just have to grab a short early run as and when I can.
Hoping our Parkrun will start in June βΉοΈ- it's still not on the list as yet but π€π»
Such a lovely time of year to go trail running Beth. The bluebells are spectacular at the moment. And all trail runners walk a bit and get lost! πEnjoy, and fingers crossed for your parkrun, theyβve been coming back with permissions thick and fast the last couple of days π€π€π€
I got caught in an absolute deluge yesterday and loved it! I did a couple of quiet βwhoopsβ to acknowledge the fun. Ok, not so quiet ππ.My Quest to support my friend to run 5k has got complicated this week. Her friend also joined us which was fine, but they both live several miles away from me and were talking about alternating venues. Thatβs not what I signed up for when she asked for support, and donβt really want to add an hours round trip travelling on top of my running during a busy week. So Iβm just going to be honest with them and either welcome them to join me or suggest they run together closer to their homes.
Iβll phrase it nicely and hope they arenβt offended.
Suddenly my solo running with my music blaring in my ears sounds like bliss π
I have to admit, solo running, in the rain, with the right type of soundtrack in your ears - thatβs my idea of heaven! ππ I can totally relate to that. π You donβt want to complicate things, running shouldnβt be complicated. Iβm sure your friends will understand π
They did π. The βextraβ friend said she was out for nearly 2 hours just for a 30 min run - so she understood my reluctance to add the traveling. Iβm not sure now why my friend asked me to run with her if they have each other but never mind. If they are serious about running theyβll find a way. As long as everyone is happy π.
Never too late HH! Oh and that is such a lovely Quest to have, Iβm quite jealous! Itβs such a buzz when you finally get it! I hope youβve got some treat planned for when you do? You may possibly get it in the rain too!! πͺπͺ
Im going to post on here tomm, as Im short of time tonight, but..... Im really chuffed , but I thought I'd tell you because we were talking about quests. So tonight I decided to go back and do one of the consolidation podcasts from the C25K, the speed one, and................ I did a 5km in 30mins and 18 secs!!! still not quite a sub 30, but Ive never got that close before!!ππππββοΈ
Hi, so my 2 goals this month were to 1. Run 10 miles
2. Run 100K or more over the whole month. On Sunday past I finally managed to run my 1st 10 miles. The last 20-30 minutes of it was run in heavy rain π§, which actually helped me. Like some others I love to run in the rain π.
I'm also confident I'll now break 100K overall this month.
Looks like youβre doing brilliantly Colin! Congratulations on your first 10 miles, itβs a big physical and psychological hurdle to get over, and I can certainly appreciate how the rain helped towards the end! Lovely and refreshing! And thatβs a really good pace too! πππ Did you go over to the Marathon forum and get your 10 miles badge?
All the best on your 100k, Iβm sure youβll get it πππ
Generally I am quite happy running in the rain, but preferably not icy cold and without strong winds.
I have just done my 9K, the last long run before the Vitality 10K.
I haven't spotted anywhere to run near the campsite next week so we will run before we set off on Monday and possibly when we get home on Thursday but we will be doing a lot of walking in York. It is about a half hour walk from the campsite to the Park and Ride bus stop - not worth driving there by the time we pack everything up and unhook the electricity, etc we could be nearly there
But we will be doing our usual (not) parkrun and 2nd breakfast on Saturday.
Just back from a run aimed at one of my Quest targets, stretching out the distance I can run at my (good day) par parkrun pace of 5'00"/k ..... so trying for 6k in 30 mins. Spot on at half way after a good 3rd k, but couldn't hang on on the way back, losing 15 secs in the next 2k and another couple in the last one for 30'17" overall. Not a lot of wind but a bit against coming home, especially the 4th k (which is probably why the 3rd was good ). Sausage baguette to follow was excellent .
Next mess is the Reunion 5k at Kempton Park on Saturday, so next Questing will probably be next Wednesday, after something gentle on Monday.
Thankfully my second jab (12 days ago now) doesn't seem to have affected my fitness at all . You look after that hamstring TC ......
Hello TailChaser and Katnap , No rainy runs for us this week, but the clouds did threaten us this morning.
My first run of the week was up and down the inclines around Southsea Castle as part of a 4k run. I was already aching a bit from my strengthening exercises the day before, but the day after this run I was saying βoh my glutesβ and βoh my kneesβ . Just shows that I need the hill practice and the exercises.
Monday was just a short easy run (except for the wind) to get the joints working again. I followed this with a post run session of Yoga with Adrienne.
No long run for me this week as I am conserving energy for Saturdayβs Reunion Run so I did 4k at my C25K pace this morning. Of course UpTheStanley managed 6k in the same time! π
Yes TailChaser, Iβve put off hills too long, and I think it will help to add something different to my repertoire. Iβm doing it twice a month, so I can get some JogRunSprint in next week instead.
Our race numbers have arrived so it must be happening!
π¦π¦π¦π¦ So silly to get excited about a 5k but Iβm treating it like a tourist parkrun, even wearing my apricot shirt.
Excellent plan Dexy, youβll really feel the difference after a while.
I can totally understand your excitement - the first race with a large group of runners in over a year? Whatβs there to feel calm about? Almost makes up for the lack of an βactualβ Vitality 10k. Wear your Apricot with pride π
Oh no! π― I missed this quest post and last weekβs as well! How did that happen!
Have just caught up with reading! So huge thanks to both of you to carrying the quest this week so brilliantly!
My quests:
1. So I finally managed to do one thing I set out to do ca 4 weeks ago: find a way to do yoga outside. So thatβs one down, but now to see if I can make outside yoga a regular habit!
2. Running quests: continue 3x per week, but slowly increase in distance again beyond 7.5k. (After my last 10k I went back to long runs being ca 7-8k)
3. My big quest for the next ... say 6 weeks... maybe 8 weeks π³: get the courage to run a Parkrun for real with real people in the real world. π±π±π±
Just time to squeeze this week's activities in...Managed to get out for two runs, and happy to report progress was made. Building slowly as my lungs are bursting with just 25 mins of running presently.
I did all five P.E sessions with Joe Wicks last week and YWA everyday. So Strength and Flex were covered.
