Garmin app vo2 max

I was out for a short 3 k run this morning 27.20 as hip playing up and didn’t want to do damage. Did clamshell exercises as well. Was wondering if anyone else’s app on vo2 max shows what mine has as attached photo. My age is 65 by the way . But on some other post have fitness age as well and don’t know if that is good for my fitness age.

I would accept what it says Doris8. Well done. Shorter quicker runs help to push the VO2 max reading up. There is a bit of gender discrimination going on though. I am 69, male, and my VO2 max has clicked back to 38 after a period at 36 (I have had a few injury lay offs). My 38 only scores me as “good” for my age and puts me in the top 40 per cent for age and gender. In fairness it was in the mid 40’s in the summer before last when I was building up distance on holiday; so loads of long walks as well as long steady runs. Golden rule; if it goes up, brilliant, if it goes down....it is a meaningless approximation and can be ignored.👍

Ok thanks . Will be going shorter runs if that’s the case , don’t know about the quicker part of it🤣

I think that is very probably exactly what it would say Doris8 if you had a Garmin that gave the fitness age.. my VO2 max says 33 and top 20per cent.. my Garmin vivoactive 4s gives me a fitness age of 44 although I’m 64.. - it does cheer me up no end but the wrinkles and grey hairs tell a different tale..😂

Bang on, B66. After a run I look mainly at cadence, stride length, heart zones and VO2 max. Despite keeping to heart zones 2 and 3 with short visits into 4, the ruddy VO2 max is gradually increasing my fitness age. It is definitely not on my Christmas card list 🤨

I have a basic VO2 max version; doesn’t give a fitness age 👍

You're into the lower end of "excellent" and that's good. I'm currently yo-yoing either side of the good/excellent division too.

The divisions between poor/fair/good/excellent/superior vary by gender and age.

See the table here: www8.garmin.com/manuals/web...

Thanks for that. Will have a look at this😊

I have just seen your post today great run and times. It mentioned your in watch good books as your fitness age has bounced back down 30 to 25 years. Is that on the chart u posted me?

I don't know how it calculates the fitness age. Maybe your watch doesn't do that?

Doris8 profile image

Oh maybe not I wish it would say I run like a 40 year old or younger make my day🤣

I'd say that's great 😊 mine doesn't show age either...

Thanks as Nowster said it could be the kind of Garmin we have. I have a forerunner 35.

235 for me

I seriously dislike the VO2 max... it hates me when I do calm runs (what I prefer) and loves me when I do runs with fartleks or where my heart-rate shoots up high. It's on 39 at the moment and sometimes it grants me 40 when I had a hard run, but mostly only until my next run (which is slow again) and it drops to 39 again. But for me 39 and 40 are still within the 'good' category. So it depends on age I think if the number is good or excellent or so.

I’ve got mine into the superior category by run / walking to a low heart rate. I only run one flat out 5k per week 👍🏻

in reply to RunWillie

Not fair! I run/walk (Jeff) all my runs. 2 to 3 times a week a short run of 30 minutes (about 3,4 km) and 1 time a week a long run of 60 minutes. 1 of the short runs I do 10 minutes of fartleks. I guess my watch tells me I'm just not healthy 🤪

No Hidden just keep going. I only told you to encourage you that slow is good 👍🏻

Yes I’m on run walk just now short distances but still struggling getting heart rate down. When I’m out on normal walk it goes down where I want but I still slow jog run walk to try this but still not coming down much. I haven’t given it much chance yet but will preserve 😀

Hi Doris8

I started low heart rate training in September last year. It has taken until now to consistently run/walk at my target heart rate. It really does take patience. I’m stubborn so refused to give up on it 🤣

I agree it does depend on age looking at graph but I’ll take excellent. 😀

Yesterday my Forerunner 235 suddenly showed me my fitness age under the VO2 max score. Wasn’t there before so must have been an update.

Despite the score dropping to 38 after pushing my heart rate doing intervals, it made my day as I’m as fit as an excellent 20-year-old (I’m 50)!

It must be the different garmin then. I wish I had the fitness age of a 20 year old but I’ll take my 34 excellent garmin said😀

I just searched about this as i just noticed this notice on Garmin connect. I’ve never noticed it before, and can’t say I understand it ,but it was good to see.

I’m 64 in a few weeks and have a sore hip too. I hope yours resolved ok 🙂

Yes hip better thanks , and yours gets better too. Took me a while . I’m not into all this tech either.
