Foot injury from shoelaces: Anyone else?

So I tightened my shoelaces on Saturday morning before a 10k run. About halfway, I could feel it wasn't right - the laces were too tight against the bone of my foot - but I'm a stubborn fool so I kept going. Got home and my foot was very sore.

Took a couple of rest days and went out again yesterday for a 4k. Sore again. So I'm taking the rest of the week off in the hopes that rest helps my foot.

Has anyone else had this kind of problem?

I think its just about trying to get it right . Not too tight, not too slack . I'm sure in a day or two your foot should feel okay 😊👍

Shoe laces are tricky, too loose and you can get blisters too tight and it hurts it just takes practise to find what works

Mine were too tight. I kept getting a pain on the top of my foot. They are much looser now to allow for swelling. I now need to get longer laces as these Brooks ones are really short. I suppose they are not supposed to be flapping around either. There is a bewildering plethora of ways to lace up running shoes on the net. Trial and error I guess.

When having to tight laces, my feet get numb and fall asleep 😴!

My feet used to get bone sore and numb across the arch in both running shoes and walking boots. I researched different lacing patterns (sorry, I haven't got a link, but you can Google it) and it turns out I have high arches. So now I lace up tight but miss out a couple of holes in the centre - it looks a bit weird but I'm sure I could hear my feet sigh with relief! No more soreness, just happy feet 🙂. It is well worth experimenting to find what suits your foot shape.

Your feet will naturally swell very slightly when running. You need to take that into account.

There are some lacing techniques which lock the shoe at the ankle but leave the lacing at the middle of the foot looser.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Some interesting things to think about.

The high arches thing is definitely a possibility. My mom has them so I could too.

I think I was overcompensating for the lace issue during my runs, which ended up hurting the heel and sole, so while I take some rest days, I'll look into some different ways of lacing my shoes. Another bit of running nerdery to get into 😆

Don’t do them too tightly, but lock them at the top so they don’t budge 👌🏽
