I couldn’t get to sleep last night so I was lying in bed looking at my phone and came across The Sandringham January Virtual Race. At 01:42am I completed my entry and put a little post on in case anyone else fancied some January running bling.
This morning at 8:00 I laced up my nice new Brooks Ghost 12’s and headed out into the crisp morning air, there was frost on the cars, and the pavements felt a bit slippery under foot, but I love running in the cold as you feel so much more awake.
I chose my usual route and set off at what felt like a reasonable pace and in my mind as I was running along I was thinking to myself if I can keep this up I might even get a PB 🤔.
I saw one or two other runners who gave a friendly wave, and a smallish chap who I’ve often seen running who was wearing a striped shirt and reminded me of Where’s Wally, he has a distinctive running style in that his arms hang loosely by his sides as he runs....and run he does! he was soon a dot in the distance.
I reached the park where the paths were particularly slippery, I did my customary lap and headed out through the gates homeward bound, the last 2k felt quite tough but I kept up the pace until I eventually heard ‘distance 10 kilometres’. I checked my time and discovered I’d achieved a new 10k PB 😁 I only shaved 34 seconds off the previous one, but I’ll take that.
I’ve submitted my time to the event organisers and was pleased to see a few minutes later on their results page that I was 20th, a bit later I was 21st and I’ve no doubt my placing will drop a lot more by the end of January 😂.
I wonder if the leader was Where’s Wally 🤔 he’s certainly quick enough and I’d give anything to be able to run as quick as he does.
Ahhh Thank You 😊 take it easy and rest those legs, you’re still getting used to the longer runs, 28 minutes is a long time to run continuously and takes its tole until you get used to it. 👍🏃♀️
Thanks David_G that was a good run, always nice to get a PB, and I’m a sucker for the old running bling 🏅
I find other runners are normally happy to give you a little wave or a thumbs up, doesn’t cost anything and it’s just a nice gesture. I always do it 👍🏃♂️🏃♀️
Thanks Rebecca I can honestly say I enjoyed that run, temperature according to my phone was 0 🥶 but I love running in the cold, and a nice bit of running bling to look forward to in the post 🤗🏅
Wow - that's like really productive insomnia ! But still achieving a personal best 10k after not a very good night's sleep, is pretty impressive ! I also did a 10k today - no personal best 1:15:55 - but quite interesting reflection that it no longer feels like a 'major achievement' - it's like, 'yeah, I did a 10k'... I mean, 5k has become my minimum for 'short runs' and I can feel that 10k is going to become my standard for 'not very long runs'. Who'd of thought !
👨⚕️ The results of your tests have come back and you’re suffering from Productive Insomnia, you may find yourself becoming obsessed by the need to earn shiny metal objects threaded onto strips of ribbon, which is quite common 😂
I know what you mean, 5k is just a short run now and 10k is a nice comfortable long run, that’s how far we’ve come....isn’t that crazy.
Ahhh thanks Zo 😊that was a good run this morning, I seem to run better when it’s cold. I was really pleased to get a new PB and looking forward to the accompanying running bling 🏅
You know me too well BL64 😂 I’m not sleeping well at the moment with all that’s going on, and just happened to spot that race in the wee small hours, I thought...🤔 why not and also it’s nice to focus on something else.
So glad I did now, it was a good run and of course a nice shiny medal to look forward to 🏅🤗
Yes it must have been a very welcome distraction and soul food for you on that run. And a nice shiny bit of bling to come 💎Safe journey today and hope all goes off ok tomorrow 😘
Thank You, running has been a very welcome distraction, I’m so glad I discovered it...and this forum....the funeral is Tuesday. The weather forecast of snow is worrying though 😬
Talking of Where's Wally, I bough a friend of mine a great book for this birthday just before Christmas. It was called "Where's Dom?" featuring Barnard Castle and other popular day trip destinations . You get the idea....
Well I spotted him but he can’t half shift 🏃♂️💨 such an unorthodox running style, looks a bit like he’s been caught short and he’s running for the loo, it seems to work though so good on him 👍
I’m glad I wasn’t drinking when I read that, otherwise it would have gone everywhere! 🤣 I can vision the guy running and it makes me wonder if you are able to keep a straight face. I don’t mean that nastily btw, but it does sound bizarre 😂
Might try his technique next time, make sure he doesn’t see me though as he might think I’m taking the mickey, and I couldn’t outrun him if he chased me 😂
🤓You clever girl 😁I’ve just checked that one out ! It’s in March and you get a free costume 🤔 oooohhhh that’s very tempting......that little chap wouldn’t need a costume!
Why don’t you sign up for it, a nice bit of running bling for you 🏅 I’ll give it a go I think 👍🏃♂️
Can you imagine if you saw that chap running and he sees you in that costume 🤣🤣🤣. Just don’t do the straight down arm thing otherwise you might find him running after you!!! 🤣
I couldn’t sleep last night and when i woke up it was 10.22 this morning, hence the park being busy by the time we got out Sounds like a great run and a PB as well 😀😀😀
Well done, blimey 10k PB, did you actualy get any sleep 🤔 as for where's wally, your pace looks pretty fast, so wally, well!!! 🥵 nice bit of bling to celebrate your one year runiversary! 🏅🥳😊
Cheers Peter44, I think Wally may have remembered he’d left the gas on 😂 he was shifting fair play for him. A nice bit of running bling though as you say, so something to look forward to 🏅👍
That's great stuff! Well done on the run and the PB! 💪🏻 If I'd have seen where's Wally I would have likely tried to catch him 🤣 my competitive head comes on when I see proper runners 🤣🤣🤣 I did read your post about the race and the medal 🥇 and have to admit to being tempted but not sure if the Mrs would appreciate me starting another collection, no space to keep the stuff I'm already hoarding 🤣
Thanks Catho78 😊 it was nice to have such a good run today, there’s still time to enter as it runs until 31st Jan. Nice to have some running bling to kick off 2021 👍
I’ll do it. I’ve got one 10K medal and a 1hr medal on its way. I got a medal hanger for Christmas saying “She believed she could, so she did!”and it’s a little empty lol, feeling like a magpie 😜Currently training for a half marathon and there’s a Cambridge virtual race of 5K,10K or half marathon if run by 31/03/21. My half marathon plan ends at the end of March but I think it’s doable, psyching myself up to commit to a race, just can’t miss any training. Nothing ventured right 😬
Yaayyy ! 😁 well done Catho78 it’ll be a nice addition to that medal rack 🤔 I want one of those, I’ve seen them on eBay. I’m tempted by the Cambridge Virtual Half Marathon now you’ve told me about it....I’ll give it some thought, I’ve covered 10 miles twice but that was tough, but I think I could do it 👍🏅🏃♂️
Go for it, you can do it. Just signed up for Sandringham 5K thanks as a mini goal, running it at race pace. 10 miles is impressive, well done. I’m aiming for that by the end of next week, got 14K this week 🤞loving the long slow runs though, and the challenge
Well done, nice 5k medal 🏅. I did my second 10 mile run for the Salisbury 10 Mile Virtual Run, so I got a nice medal for that one. I’ll have a look at that half Marathon when next week is over with. I’ve signed up for a Race At Your Pace 50 Mile February Challenge, so a few longer practice runs will help towards that 👍
Hiya, I took a leaf out of your book. I signed up for the 5K last night and ran it early this frosty morning! I always run faster in the cold lol. Looking forward to my medal and I opted for an engraved one with name and race time. It wasn’t fast but sub 40 5K I was happy with. Plus other half had put up my medal rack when I got in from work yay. Magpie looking out for more bling lol. I never knew how fun and addictive this could be. And although it’s virtual I feel like I’m running with an audience as your uploading results so makes my push myself more. Loving it, happy running 🏃🏽♀️
That’s brilliant! Thanks for letting me know, Well done Catho78, we’ve both got a nice running medal to look forward to now, I’m really pleased you did it. I’m going to get a rack, it’s nice to look at them as it gives you a sense of achievement. It doesn’t matter that it’s virtual, you still ran that distance that’s all that matters. Well done.....Happy Running to You Too 👍
I opted for the one with name and race time too 😁🏅
Indielass00 clever girl that she is found a virtual race in March 2021 called the Where’s Wally Weekender ! 😂 so that’s another one I’ll probably be doing. It includes a free costume and of course more bling ! ......maybe another medal for your rack too ? 🤔🏅
Thank You Banana12 😊 very poetic 😂 I was pleased with that run, last 2k was tough but I was determined to keep up the pace as it was a race after all.....little poetic myself there🏅🏃♂️
Brilliant work CP, congrats on the PB! I know exactly what you mean about the cold pinching your cheeks and giving you an instant wake-up. It’s a refreshing feeling to say the least!
Funny what you say about Wheres Wally guy. For whatever reason, I’ve ran a min or two with my hands quite static by my sides and I quite like the feeling. I think I’ve seen clips of trailing runners adopting the method but I haven’t got a clue as to why.
Thank You ACC 😊I just love being out in the fresh air more since I’ve started running, I appreciate it a lot more.
I know what you mean about that style of running, I think some people do that at the end of a run to maybe conserve energy 🤷♂️ or it could just be a technique people use, works for him that’s for sure 👍🏃♂️
Well done, its a great feeling isnt it! I know what you mean about cold runs, I love them too, I and I'm getting better at knowing what layers to put on. I went out to do a 8Km today and thought I'd just do a steady pace, given the ice was really bad so I made a decision to run into the nearest village so I could stay on the road as its looked much safer. So there I am doing a 'grateful 8km' with Coach Bennett and I've done 6.5km and well on my way home, when , suddenly two guys came from no where and over took me!. Well, my motivation to not be left behind kicked in and I was determined that they would not disappear into the distance! So from there on I kept them about 50 metres infront but no more. I really did have to push myself but it just shows what you have left in the tank when you get some motivation! When I got home I looked at my stats for the last 1.5km and I really had pushed myself, massive pace incase!!! 😂⛸️
Yep I love it, being out in the fresh air, well done for keeping up with those gazelles, that did make me smile, your competitiveness definitely kicked in there, it just shows you though as you say that if you get that extra bit of a push you can do much more than you thought you were capable of. 👍
I spotted that 10k virtual race and just thought 🤔...why not...and running, when you know it’s a race definitely spurs you on to pick up the pace. 🏃♂️
If its not too late, I'm going to have a look at that virtual run too.I noticed you said the funeral was Tuesday, I hope all goes as well as it can for you, know that will be tough.
It’s not too late, you can choose from 5k, 10k or half Marathon, nice medal to kick off 2021.
Thank You Hedgehogs123, I really do appreciate that, yes mums funeral is Tuesday, it won’t be easy, I’ve written a eulogy, I just hope I can hold it together to read it.
thanks I'll have a look.As for the funeral, you will find the strength I'm sure. I lost a very close friend a few years ago and wrote something to read out at his funeral, not knowing if I would be able to do it. I did, but it wasn't what I wrote, it just came out from the heart, and I did get upset, but it didnt matter.
You take care and hopefully 2021 will be better for you going forward.
Thanks Sofaspud, it was a good run that one. I enjoy being out in the fresh air a lot more since I took up running, the cold makes you feel awake /alive, but as you say you have to watch out for those slippery paths, they can be deceptive.
Ahhh there she is 😊 I only just noticed your reply. Thanks Jane I’m looking forward to that medal, I’ve bought a medal holder off eBay to hang them on, be nice to see them on display 👍
