Despite being mentally drained, I've had a week of wonderful winter activities I wanted to share with you all. The pic collage starts in the upper left hand corner with my Sunday "long" run with my new yaktrax snow cleats. I couldn't resist stopping to take a picture of my shoe print amidst the dog and deer prints. There were so many animal prints in the fresh snow that day.
The next picture below it is one from my Monday night moonlight snowshoe with my hubby. The coulee we snowshoe in was too dark for a picture so I took one of him playing on the snow mound in the middle of the road as we made our way back home. He really is just a big kid at heart.
The two bottom pictures and the tall middle picture is from my birthday hike that a friend took me on on Tuesday. We drove to a pretty little oasis on the prairie an hour and a half away from home. It is the cutest little rustic campground that I must get to this summer. It was so peaceful with the creek running through it. We hiked through all the camp spots and up a portion of the hiking trails then stopped to have a lovely picnic consisting of coffee, meat and crackers, carrots and chocolate. She really thought of everything. She knows me so well. That was the perfect way to spend my birthday and I am so glad I decided to take the day off and spend it with my dear friend.
The right hand middle and top corner pictures are from my run this morning. It was a chilly -13°C but just gorgeous with the sun shining highlighting all the hoarfrost. I stopped a lot today to take pictures because it was all so pretty. My legs were heavy, I was overdressed and it wasn't the easiest run but I am so glad I got out. Now, I (think I) am ready to tackle my weekend on call.
Happy running everyone. Let's make the best of what we've got. We will get through this stronger and tougher than ever.

Wow what a wintery super setting Sask I'd be wrapped up with so many layers out there 🥶
It is amazing how warm you get when you are being active. I made the mistake of wearing too layers on my top half under my jacket today and I paid for it. I was way too hot and sweaty. I find with running because there isn't any down time, you don't have to overdress, just choose your layers wisely. On our hike I was very comfortable but i got a little cool after sitting for an hour enjoying our picnic so I could have maybe wore one more layer on my bottom half. We were hoping to have a campfire but didn't bring firewood and it was all locked up. Next time we'll bring some wood and have a little campfire, as well. Snowshoeing you also warm up very quickly so I a man careful to jot overdress. You just tell have to plan for the activity that you are doing.
Love your post! I learnt the hard way, always putting on too many layers. Have atleast got it right but one night I went out when it was raining and cold with running bottom's waterproofs and two running tops and a waterproof jacket. I absolutely boiled!!!,🔥🔥🔥🔥🏃♀️😂
I am so glad you enjoyed it and I can share it with you lovely lot 😊
Hi Sask. What a lovely post - thank you for sharing the wonderful photos of your very snowy activities and your birthday 🎂 - Congratulations 🥳 !
I haven’t run for over a week 😬 due to a decorating marathon, which I can finally see the end of, thank goodness 😅. I shall be heading out over this weekend whilst the final coats of paint dry and I shall try to find my running legs again 😊 🤞🏼 🏃🏼♀️ .
I am glad to hear that is light at the end of that decorating marathon! I'm sure it looks great and was well worth it. Enjoy your run this weekend on (running) rested legs.
Wonderful winter weather and photos you took Sask, a great run as well, - 13C where you are makes the temperature of +11C where I am tropical in comparison where I live in the UK, I think I will have to wait until December before the winter weather starts.
Yes, I am often jealous of the temperatures I see on the runs on here and the lovely green countryside. Although I don't have the rains like you guys see, which is a whole other set of running challenges. Enjoy your Autumn while you have it 🍂🍁
Most of the trees have now shed their leaves, so the best part of Autumn is over, we have still got ten days of Autumn left before winter begins, because of the general situation regarding Covid 19, to cheer people up children have asked their parents to put up the Christmas Tree and play Christmas Music a little earlier than normal, my next door neighbour and a family not far away have already put up their Xmas Tree to please their young children, I am waiting until December to put up my Xmas Tree
Last weekend when I was shopping, one store was already playing Christmas music. Normally I don't like hearing Christmas music before December (it just seems too early) but I don't mind I think this year, especially with how Christmassy we feel with all our snow already.
Thanks dijep 😊. It really was a wonderful week of activities.
Each temperature has it's challenges. My issue is when the weather changes, trying to remember what I wear for that temperature. I overdressed a bit today given I've only had a couple cooler runs like this so far this year but I'll have it figured out in no time (then we'll either warm up or go I to a deep-freeze 🙄)
It really is nice to have the snow stick around. The last few years we would get a good dump of snow, just to have it melt (or blow) away in no time. Even with the couple warm days we had this week, it is still here and more fell. I'm hoping for a nice snowy winter this year 🤞❄️⛄️
Thanks Jan. I love Autumn, with the changing colours and the leaves falling and piling on the ground, it is just very short-lived here. So we make the best of it. I have fresh apple cider cooking in the slow cooker to enjoy tonight so here's hoping I have time to sit with a good book after supper and sip a nice cup of non-alcoholic apple cider.
Oh, I much prefer snow over ice. I got a bit of a surprise today when I first started because there is quite abit of ice under the snow. It makes for really slow going. Really icy conditions is one of the things that will keep me in though. We had just above freezing temperatures on Tuesday and blowing snow making for really icy conditions so I didn't run the last 2 nights because of it. I like to at least see where the ice is 😆
Being a pessimist I was looking for bear tracks; wrong place for them I guess. I expected to see one around every corner up in Algonquin! Typical tourist!!
You are a tough lady Sask; you will come through this 🙂
Once you acclimate, it actually is quite a nice winter temperature (if it isn't windy). If it gets warmer then the snow gets really crusty and the roads get icy. We always say the perfect winter day is -10 to -15°C, sunny, with no wind...we don't ask for much 😆
The big problem with a British winter is the damp. When you get down to -10°C (which we had briefly in 2010) all the dampness has gone from the air, and being out in the cold (with suitable clothing) is quite pleasant.
I grew up in the north coast of BC and the last time I visited in the winter I found it so cold due to the dampness. This dry cold is so much easier to deal with.
Oh my goodness - as I’ve said many times before- just love your posts 💕 what a winter wonderland of adventure.I’ve always been OK with cold (I thought) but my ... that’s extreme to my mind.
Now feeling a bit of a wimp for not going out as often as I should in wind and rain - in south of England it’s been a bit dull and very strong winds,.. and of course, rain!
Did an interval thing this week but most of it in a strong coastal headwind - hard to catch my breath at times but in a weird way quite exhilarating 🤔
Managed to keep steady (slow) pace but could only do 50 mins when I was aiming for 75.
Cold, rain and strong winds, now that I would struggle with getting out in. But you're right, it is so exhilarating and you feel like a BEAST when you do it 💪. Great job this week getting out there!
Thanks IP. I am so glad my friend planned the hike and we still did it despite the snow. It made it that much more special for us.
Stunning pictures and you're doing a fabulous job of balancing demands of work and time against being kind to yourself 😀 I hope your weekend on call goes well for you. So pleased you are getting out and about and have a smile 😃 happy belated birthday 🎂
What beautiful pictures, and love the sound of the apple cider along with a good book, so cozy!Where are you? I find it hard enough running on pavements, let alone ⛄️
I'm on the prairies in Canada (Saskatchewan) so we tend to have a long winter. I quite enjoy a snowy run, but it isn't fast. There is no speedwork for me for the next few months unless I hit the treadmill.
Belated happy birthday! What a beautiful place you live in. I still can't imagine running with all that extra gear you must need and in snow. Makes my muddy puddles seem inconsequential 😂😂
Thanks 😊. The best thing I did was when I bought some winter specific run gear. It is nice and light weight but warm. My run trousers are wind- proof on the front panels which help as well. It does take a bit to get out the door though as I get everything on 😆
Belated birthday wishes to you! 💐 Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos and news of your running, walking exploits. I love the positivity and gratitude in your posts for the changing seasons and embracing whatever challenges they throw at you.
