A quick look at the forecast for Thursday had your Southsea Motley Crew of me, Dexy5, UpTheStanley, Coddfish and MrC doing a quick re-jig of the calendar to (not)parkrun today instead. Lots of lovely rough sea and plenty of it coming up onto the promenade but we battled against the wind, hoping to finish before the rain came. Some hope! Ah well, it’s only rain and we quickly nipped into a cafe for our usual post trot breakfast and to dry off. We chose a newly opened venue today, operated by someone who had run a local restaurant until March - we do try to keep it local! I did a rather slow 50:46 but in my defence it was my first time out since Sunday’s VV10k and a fair bit of it was into a very strong headwind ! Happy (not)parkrunning folks!
Let’s go today, forecast tomorrow is awful! - Bridge to 10K
Let’s go today, forecast tomorrow is awful!
Nice venue for a Wednesday run Oldgirlruns 👍 though that sea looks too 🥶 for a dip even in a woolly swimsuit 🤭
There were a few people in the water! Not for me I don’t think, much as I love the sea!
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyikes seriously that's proper hardcore swimmers Oldgirlruns
A very stormy scene in that photograph with the higher waves coming on to the prom.
Listening to the weather forecast is important, so you ran today before the weather gets worse, a good run for you today OGR considering the elements.
I have just had a severe weather warning for all day Saturday so I am thinking of bringing forward 24 hours for what will be my 50th parkrun, that 50 is made up of 17 official Parkruns and 33 virtual and (not) parkruns, if I do run on Friday it will be at the same place I ran, run 3 of week 6 of C25K as I intend to go there on Friday morning. 😊 🏃🏾
5k is 5k, very well done! 👏👏👏 I love running at high tide 🌊🌊
Great stuff! You got out and did it! 👏👏👏👏
It’s wild enough today, i’m not attempting a run tomorrow either then
I think I will add “check the tide” to the list of things I check before choosing route / setting off. Running west inland and then east on the prom made sense given the wind direction, but I hadn’t appreciated it was so close to high tide. First of all I got soaked in sea spray by the departing IOW hovercraft. Next, waves were completely washing over the recently repaired area near Mozarella Joe’s (one wonders how effective that repair will be) but I was able to run in the road to avoid getting my feet wet. Then there was a lot of surface water on the corner by the aquarium, plus the bits of overlapping and seaweed on the section from there to the castle. So quite a lot of salt on the skin by this point.
But it was a really enjoyable run and my choice of course meant I had the wind behind me for almost two thirds of it, which has got to be a bonus. And then it was nice to get indoors with friends out of the rain that was just starting ... a fairly usual end to the Southsea (not) parkrun. Much better than tomorrow’s forecast.
Thanks for writing up.
Interesting reading your post Coddfish, at least for someone like me who lives 30/40 miles inland from the sea I don't need to worry about sea weed, high tides or big waves hindering me from running 5Ks or more, with severe weather I still have to be careful about falling trees and large puddles.
Yes , I was skirting around the encroaching waves by the castle as well! But it was all good fun wasn’t it!
Well done OGR, this week’s weather makes our VV10000 on Sunday seem very benign. I ran today too - didn’t even try to up the pace as it was so squelchy underfoot and pretty windy too. I did a pedestrian 5.5k, didn’t count it towards (Not) PR though.
Well done braving the elements today! 🏃♀️🏃♀️
I was still feeling Sunday’s 10k in my legs today so my 1st 2k into the wind was around 8 min/km. it was a run full of faffage as I’d been trying something new on my watch yesterday and hadn’t reset it, so it wouldn’t show distance travelled, which is really useful when doing a 5k run. I also changed route after seeing the sea spray coming over the prom and ran up the hill past the bandstand instead and doubled back to the pyramids. My watch was Regularly telling me I was either slower than pace of 7.15 or faster (depending on wind direction) and funnily enough my overall run was an average of 7.18!
Note to self: reset watch back to normal display before the next run.
The rain got me at the end but a good decision to go out this morning.
Good for you!💪🏻😄 Coastal dwellers have to be hardy souls.
Great photo - I like the touch of green showing in the sea against the grey of the prom. I love the way that the sea is different every time you see it. 😄
Today was definitely too close to Sunday's run for my poor ole legs ....
But breakfast was fine
Sounds like a bit of an obstacle race, what with sea, spray, seaweed and wind - very bracing!
I managed to get out this morning too for a 10k and battled against it, running south and west down the foreshore, but was definitely wind-assisted on the return journey!
Well done OG & co! The remnants of Hurricane Epsilon apparently, so you can all say you’ve run in hurricane conditions 💨 💨😁
Well done Oldgirlruns. Your photo is beautiful even if it does look very rough at sea🏃♀️🏃♀️
That looks wild!!!
Blimey! Well done all of you for braving those conditions! I chickened out yesterday as my plan is for a long run, Brighton to Newhaven, but looking at the forecast today is worse.😣 I think I’m just going to do it and see what happens 😅
My legs were still feeling the weekend’s efforts, but I went out for a 5k yesterday too - dry, bright but windy. Didn’t have to worry about seawater thankfully 😂
