3Rs: Rainy Runs, Runkeeper’s Erin & RunLEJOG

🌧 Well, from looking on this forum I see that lots of runners seemed to have had a nice rain-free sunrise this morning, whereas my view out of the window was rain rain rain.

🏃🏻‍♀️ My met office app also didn’t give me any hope for a drier weather window, so there was nothing else I could do other than get out in the rain and run.

💻 That’s the good thing about having poured hours into making a plan. The thought of breaking your straight streak of following your plan is just to dire to contemplate. You rather get your gear on and face the rain.

🎉 And of course Coach Bennett (from NRC) often suggests to celebrate just that, that you get out there, as that is the hardest part. Finishing your run is good, but starting it is so much greater.

🧐 Accompanying me was Runkeeper’s Erin, talking me through her ‘My first 5k’ training run. Now, it could be seen as a flaw that it didn’t provide a more detailed description of this run. And I started it not knowing what to expect. (NRC designed the descriptions for featured audio coached runs so much better, so any fans for audio coached runs are probably better off with NRC).

🎧 Anyway, Erin’s First 5k is actually not a 5k as I had hoped, but the beginning of a 6 week plan to get to 5k, a la Couch to 5k. But it is easy enough to either interpret this as a Jeffing (walk-run intervalls) session, or even replace the walks with slower recovery jog and taking up the pace at the running sections. And I did the latter, which provided me with a good 35 min carried interval run. Although the audio coached part is also only 25min, so a bit too short, even for the stage I am.

🎤 However I really love her voice! I’m even beginning to be jealous of her voice. I work in the music/audio sector, occasionally feature on podcasts, so sound is so important to me! And I so wish I had her voice! I wonder if more running will give me that kind of voice? Wouldn’t that be nice!

🎶 The music, or Spotify, can run on the background as always in Runkeeper, but somehow whenever Erin came on, my Spotify music didn’t turn down the volume automatically, as it usually does. So not sure if I set it up wrongly, or if this is an oversight by Runkeeper. But it was a shame to not give that beautiful voice that prominence. (Have I said already that I just love that voice?)

👍 So a nice little run, a gorgeous voice and some rain. All thumbs up in my book.

🗺 On RunLEJOG , I’m about to head out of Bodmin Moor, getting close to the boundary between Cornwall and Devon. And there is an intriguing place on the map, to which I just have to make a detour: the Hidden Valley!

🏃🏻‍♀️That’s for next time. Happy running everyone!

That was a nice little run for you today CBDB, well done on completing your first 5k, the weather today in most areas is dry with a few showers but certain places in the North of England had a short period of rain, unfortunately that seems to be the area you are in, well done on your Lejog journey. 😊 🏃🏾

Yes, just had 10min sun, then rain and now the sun is struggling to get through! (Is it April already?)

Happy running to you, too! 👏👍🤗

I ran my 30th virtual and 17th (not ) parkrun this morning, I think it will be a long time before the official Parkruns return, so that is why there are those virtual runs organised by our friend Damien here on C25K and the not parkruns organised by the official Parkrun people.

30th! Wow! I’ve got one submitted (not)Parkrun. But my 5k‘s don’t always fall into the Weekend. Not sure if one can submit a weekday 5k?

If you are registered with the Vitality Parkrun site you can register as many as 7 for your (not parkrun) most people don't run any more than one a week, any day Monday to Sunday.

It's now 30 weeks since the last official Parkrun, hence me running my 30th Virtual parkrun and 17 weeks since the (not parkruns) began. 😊 🏃🏾

Cheers. I should remember to put my 5ks in, I run a 5k once per week. Me and husband also want to start going to the park run courses and just running them for ourselves, but hubby is still on IC and can’t seem to fix his overly tight calves(Physio arranged). But touring the country from Parkrun to Parkrun just sounds brill!

I only run at two official parkruns, since my first parkrun in July 2019 I have ran 17 altogether, incidently this was my 17th (not) parkrun this morning, if you know the course of all the parkruns, all good and well,

I hope it won't be long before your husband is off the IC and running again with you.

Thank you. Me too. We have yet not run together, so that will be a new experience as well, and I can’t wait. I should say, he is a life long runner, so when I did C25k he walked faster than I ran.....backwards! 🤣🤣🤣

It's rather strange that a runner who regularly runs sub 25 minute 5K's find it more tiring running with someone who can run a 5K in 40 minutes, another good example is a runner who can run a marathon in 3 hours saying that he/she could not stay with a runner who can run a marathon in 6 hours because it would mean just that, running for 6 hours, strange but true. 😊

Yes, So true in my (limited) experience and I think I’m more of a endurance runner (and am a very slow runner). So I seem to be able to run 60min ok, but can’t really speed up. My husband seems the opposite.

I have thought of doing the magic plan on the basis of lengths, and simply running longer rather than faster. But at the moment I’m just having too much fun exploring different workouts.

But at some point I’ll be ready for planning towards 10k..... at some point...

This rings a bell when I go out with my husband (also an experienced runner) he just walks whilst I am puffing away giving it my all running!!

Yes, it’s probably smart that we haven’t run together yet. I’m quite happy slow-running blissfully unaware of my speed, as I have never run with others.

So I have a feeling it will come a bit of a shock when really experiencing how slow I am in a Parkrun. I know it, through reading other runners stats, but have not ‘experienced’ it.

Nice run CBDB well done for getting out there. As you say, coach Bennett says the start of every run should be celebrated. I try to do that now🙂👍

Mind you, I like to celebrate the end of a run too!🤣

Lovely! I agree, starting a run can be the hardest part, especially when it's not so nice out there! But you did it 👍💪😀 and you're that bit closer to JOG now 🤸‍♀️🤸‍♀️

Great run CBDB. Well done for nearly escaping Bodmin Moor. I hope the beast has not made an appearance.

🤣🤣oh the Beast of Bodmin has made an appearance, see pictures on healthunlocked.com/bridgeto... 😂😂🙏

Well done CBDB. I'm beginning to love a voice in my ear too..... Coach Bennett or Coach Cory. It really helps. And Spotify too. All those little things mean so much. Haven't run with a podcast yet. Maybe I'll find one with your voice??!!

CBDB profile image

🤣🤣..my voice ... 😂😂... oh, my voice is rather one of ‘grumpy old woman’. Grumpy with politics, Brexit and climate inaction.

So I fear that might not be very motivational.

So I’d advise to stay with running podcasts or music, as that certainly provides me with an immense positive mental boost balancing some of the catastrophic directions we’re taking in other realms of modern Britain. 😉

Coach Cory is on my list! I’ll get to meet her soon! And yes, you really get used to specific voices in your ear.

Ha! I totally get that GOW feeling. Where the hell is this country heading??? At least running helps to forget about it for a bit. Maybe I'll look for Erin on Runkeeper!

Happy weekend!

Great run! I love coach Erin too! I did my 5k with her sometimes running through the walk intervals. I got to the last 2 before my trial ran out then tried the tailored running plans but it's not the same. Just a computerised voice saying "walk. For. 30. Seconds". I was wondering if when you finish the 5k you get options for a guided 10k?? I'm looking for guided runs that I can get on my watch (can't seem to get NRC on it 🤷🏼‍♀️)

For the music, did you start spotify separately or select it in Runkeeper? If you do the later it should dip the volume when there's speaking I think?

Happy Sunday!

What a shame that NRC does not work on your watch. I only have the free versions on IOS of Runkeeper and NRC. I also don’t have a watch.

But I feel whereas RK has the most detailed runner stats as part of the free version, it has most audio coached training/runs locked behind a paywall. NRC is the opposite, I feel. I don’t like how it displays it stats as much and seems to be not as detailed as RK, but it has many more audio coached runs available for non-paying subscribers.

I’ll probably also only get the first 3 of Erin’s coached runs, as I’m also not a paying subscriber.

Music, good tip. I normally have Spotify set in the app in the QuickStart section. But there was no similar section in the coached runs. So I didn’t think to look in the QuickStart section. Afterwards it seemed as if it was not set in QuickStart. So I’ll try that tomorrow!

Thanks!
