Yesterday I had it all sorted for an epic notParkrun: a sensible Friday, well hydrated, a good night’s sleep, phone and Aftershokx charged. A second outing for my new Hokas.
Off very early to the Camel Trail which is flat and well tarmacked. A cool misty morning- ideal.
I thought after 5 months of regular, sometimes gruelling hill runs I’d be in for a new PB.
No such luck. I’m still at the 37 minutes I was achieving at Parkruns a year ago.
My best speed for the first km was 6:29.
Time to accept that a 30 minute 5 km is out of reach ? As the wise Irish John has said on this forum “nobody blames a bulldog for not being a greyhound “.
But having read so many reports yesterday from people on the IC, it’s time to count my blessings!! 😎

Counting blessings is a great way to look at running. If 30m/5k was reached by everyone youd be aiming for 25min. The important thing is you run and enjoy it, nobody is ever going to judge you for not reaching a random speed - at least if they do, shame on them. Happy running everyone 🤗
The Camel Trail - lovely place to run! I was cycling there a few weeks ago. 😄
I too think I will never be a whippet!😂 For me, enjoying running & reaping the many benefits is a more helpful focus than speed. - But working (very) gently on distance gives me something specific to aim for. 😄
Counting your blessings is a great attitude. This forum always says speed is irrelevant, however, I know where you are coming from. It is a way of pushing yourself and a second or two off your last Pb is very satisfying. Aim for just that and not the elusive 30 minutes. I managed to knock 40 seconds off my previous 5k Pb this morning and I am now buzzing. 31.04 is getting nearer to it but I aim to make small improvements over time and not push too hard. Stay safe HF. 😁
Yes count our blessings we must because that old IC seems mighty full at the moment and who wants to run fast anyway? slow and steady is still faster than a lot of others
Don't worry about time HeavyFoot or what it was last year, yesterday at (not) parkrun my time was 35.05, exactly a year ago at official parkrun it was 34.16, my average since running 5Ks is in the 33/34 minutes range and has been that despite running 10/10Ks, a 11,12 and 13K as well as a 10 mile run a few weeks ago, the main thing is that you enjoy your running. 😊 🏃🏾
HF you are very blessed... I think Irish johns comments were spot on... 😊 and just think how healthier you are and the pure joy of being able to run... you are blessed.
Well done! Let's get that out there straight off of the bat. You're there being consistent and this is what matters. I'm with Womangolfer here, it is great to do but I find it works best when you're not actually looking for it. Much more how you feel in the run itself. I work in miles so do think you can break it down into segments and build from there. Steady away is key for me. Keep going though 😊
