Along with MartinKH I have struggled with my knees recently. Today was the first run for me in 11 days. I wanted to do 5k which I did and although things weren't all there I just loved being out there again. Today I thought of all the people on here and your runs. Whatever they look like at the moment, we are doing our best to either keep running or get back to running again. I'll go out Sunday and hopefully from there can be back to three times a week.

Thank you for mentioning me in your post today, my left knee is still not right but it's only been a week for me and I know have to remain patient.
From talking with some neighbours who are experienced runners, I'm almost certain that mine is an IT band issue. At the moment the only things I'm doing are some stretching and strengthening exercises.
This is helping a little, but I can still feel some knee pain coming down stairs at the moment.
Thank you and others on here such as Irishprincess and Grannyhugs for the advice and encouragement last week. I am going to take my time, and recover more before doing any more exercises and an eventual and gradual return to running.

Thanks for the mention Martin and I’m sorry your knee is still giving you pain. But you’re doing all the right things and atm that’s all you can do. I’ve had ITB issues in the past and so I sympathise. At this stage just rest but when lockdown is over you might want to consider trying to find out what is actually causing the ITB pain, otherwise it’ll probably come and go especially when you start to run further/faster. It could be a number of things. For me it was a lopsided pelvis but special orthotics and lots of strengthening work on my obliques has more or less sorted mine out 🤞
Have you got a foam roller and are you using it? If your glutes and legs are tight then that could pull your knee out slightly and cause pain. Might be worth a shot.

Yes good idea , a friend of a friend is a sports physio, so I’ll plan an appointment for asap post lockdown.
In the meantime I have a use a roller. It’s quite painful at the mo, especially in the glute area. I’m also doing a few exercises and stretches recommended for ITB injury.

A roller can be painful to begin with but it does ease the more you use it. The first time I used one on my calves I literally yelled out in pain 😫 Happy days 🙄
Those first runs back after a spell of no running are so special. I hope your knees are ok and you’ll be firing on all cylinders soon.

Glad you managed to get out there. The weather's been so nice lately it's a shame to waste it. I've been doing a bit of yoga for strong knees - do you know? I think it helped!
Have you been to see a Physio? I got quality knee supports when mine were playing up and they helped immediately.
These are the ones I bought, I was able to try them on which helped because there are dozens to choose from.

Those pesky knees are causing many of us grief lately. I know my issue is due to weak glutes and I haven’t been doing my strength exercises. Once lockdown loosens up, you may want to consider getting an evaluation from Physio. There are so many reasons for sore knees but it is likely an imbalance of some sort - tight ITB, weak glutes. The first time I increased my distance and felt some tweaks I started to incorporate the strength training exercises on here nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/k...
and it seemed to help. I think I’ll revisit it myself tomorrow. I want to be careful not to overdo my strength training this week after last week’s fiasco but as the distance climbs the imbalances sure become more evident.

I hope your knees improve and I'm sure you know what to do to look after them. As a knee arthritis sufferer I know how important it is to do strengthening exercises and keep knees strong.

Since lockdown I've been doing hip, knee and ankle strengthening exercises using resistance bands. They're cheap and easy to buy online and I've found them really helpful. No idea why they've been gathering dust in th cupboard under the stairs for two years. 🙄
