Last year I did the Great Manchester 10k run in May and then the Wiggle Manchester Half Marathon in October.
Whilst I enjoyed the 10k, schlepping into Manchester “just” to run 10k seemed a lot of effort. And the Half was awful weather and (although I’d done three in training) a long long way, such that I’ve not run over 10k since.
Email today for the Great Manchester Run again and I’m pondering whether to do the Half.
Upside: it’s 18 weeks away and the weather should be better than October. And this has a shirt at the end (controversial Wiggle Half issue).
Downside: it’s been quite a hot day the past two years; I hated travelling home in post- 10k and Half running gear; it’s not cheap; I’m not sure if I want to be running so far.
Any advice? (Also posting on the Marathon Group so don’t feel obliged to reply to both.)

Hey Jay - is also be interested in replies to this. Like you I’ve done quite a few 10k’s now, I have signed up for 2 HM’s this year but I’m yet to do one, so can’t comment on if you should do a 2nd!
I’m in the LLHM (end March) and the Bedford HM (end of May) - so Bedford could be very warm!!
We have six HU people in the Spring Half marathon group over on the Marathon & Race support forum, all doing LLHM. I don't think we have you in the group - would you like to be added? If you're interested, the latest group post is here healthunlocked.com/marathon...
I'll add you to the list now, then it's just a case of the weekly posts which you'll get a notification of if you follow myself and roseabi . Lots of info and we'd welcome any comments/input you want to share each week 🙂
Yeah I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. Do I really want the pressure of the distance training slog again?
RED January has certainly got me running more regularly again. The beauty is the race is months away so I guess actually no need to take a decision yet at all!
I think that we know you could do it, I don’t think that you are the kind of person who feels that he has to prove something. If in your heart you have not got 100% enthusiasm then I think that you should skip it. The prep runs would become a drag. Run for fun, run to clear your head and to get that buzz feeling.
If you skip these runs, then on the day you might get the feeling that you ought to have been there then you can sign up for a longer run later in the year.
5ks are great to keep in shape and 10ks are lovely. A decent run that does not use up too much of your time. Good luck in your decision.
Hi Jay, like you I’m pondering what runs to do🤔 I’ve got the London Winter Run in a couple of weeks, then Weymouth HM in March🏃♂️🏃♀️ My training has fallen behind schedule though due to illness and a slight problem with my right leg so think I’ll give the HM a miss. I don’t want to do that, but neither do I want to put myself under any pressure😕
I’m just going to concentrate on getting better then building up my distance then see where I go from there.
As others have said, this is supposed to be fun so it’s up to us how far we push ourselves😊
You’ve mentioned some of the things that have kept me from signing up for a race so far. I’d love to do a race one day, but up til now I’ve just tootled off by myself on the day, after having a look at the weather, and when I’ve felt up to it. Will be interested to see what you decide. Wouldn’t countryside races be nicer rather than city ones?
Just 10k....How we've changed! I'm doing the London Landmarks Half and although I'm terrified , I'm also excited. It's a lot of training... but I'll do it once at least, slowly. Good luck with whatever you decide!😎
