Frustrating Year End

It’s been months since I had an injury. I was beginning to feel invincible; but you can never let your guard down!! 6k into yesterday’s run I felt a sharp pain beneath my left knee stretching down into my calf; it went away within 10 seconds and I managed to complete 12k but I can feel it this morning, especially when walking upstairs. I am wondering, given the site of the pain, whether it is the little discussed plantaris muscle. We hardly need it (the larger calf muscles do all the work), so that might explain my being able to continue the run. Daily exercises and some rest I think, Tasha99 10 miler on New Year's Day looks doubtful. ☹️

Sorry to hear of your injury. Rest up and hopefully you will be back running again soon.

Cheers damienair. Resting up isn’t one of my strong points! I will probably run out of patience and fit in a visit to the physio. Strange one; if the pain had continued I would have stopped. Can’t be a lot wrong if I completed another 6k pain free. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh bad luck! Can't help with muscle naming, but I can share your frustration 😕

Thanks grumps. I just googled calf and used logic; so I am probably wrong!😊

Oh no BC, I’m so sorry to hear that. You were on an absolute roll, but hopefully you seem to have caught it quickly. Do you plan on seeing GP/physio? With any luck you’ll get exercises to help the healing process. 🤞

Here’s to you being back up and running as soon as possible. 😀👍🤞🏃 In the meantime, enjoy the remaining festivities. 🎉🎉🎉

Thanks CC. Will give it a few days and then see physio if it is lingering. Just cross about missing the New Year run. Our local gym has just had a refurb, so maybe time to give the new equipment a whirl! 😊

Good plan BC. Good luck. 🤞😀

Think it's not plantaris - isn't that in the foot? Rest, yes, stretches yes, and yes again, good warm ups, good cool down stretches. Massage the calf muscles....perhaps good old foam rolling! 10miler on New Year's Day - not really a good idea - be kind to your leg!

So frustrating I know, but you don't want to risk long term problem for a short term fix. Having lectured you on all that - a physio referral might be a great idea, or a great sports massage - now there's a thought.

Happy days, happy running 🙂

Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply toGran4z

Thanks Gran4z, with you all the way. Not going to risk it. One of the reasons I hated O Level Biology was that they made all the names sound so similar! Apparently Plantar Fascia is foot but the Plantaris Muscle(which is on my list of suspects) is down the back of the leg. The latter is involved in foot flexing so there is a link. If it lingers, I will be sports physio bound

I think that’s the muscle that caused my recurrent niggling pain in the arch. ☹️ I had to get specialist help even to identify the source. Once correctly identified, exercises to activate glutes before running (to take the strain instead) have worked wonders. I say, go to your trusted physio for sure! Good luck.

That's where I will be headed isn't doesn't disappear pdq ! 😊

☹️ Sorry to hear that Beachcomber66. I hope it doesn’t come to anything after a few days rest.

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply toDexy5

Thanks Dexy5. Bit of an odd one. I will give it a few days and then consider physio. I don't have enough running years left to waste waiting for things to fix themselves😊

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply toBeachcomber66

Yes , my philosophy too. Your physio has been great in the past, and it can save further damage and weeks of hanging around to get good expert advice straight away.

Oh no, so sorry if you are finishing the year with an injury. Could it also be IT band related? Hope you find relief quickly

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply toGrannyhugs

Thanks GTB . It's a bit too low and central for ITB I think. I feel the pain when I raise my toes....which makes me think it could be plantaris. Fun to speculate, but job for the physio if it hangs about! She will probably laugh at my self diagnosis😊

Grannyhugs profile image
GrannyhugsGraduate10 in reply toBeachcomber66

We can keep the self diagnosis a secret, unless she suggests the same. Good luck

I am old enough to suffer ridicule and survive GTB...need to be with my kids!😊

Gran4z profile image

Hope she doesn't laugh too heartily 😄! Nothing like self-diagnosis, I'm all for it! Possibly 😂

Self diagnosis is fun.....so long as you don't make the mistake of trusting it!

Oh nooooo! Sorry to hear this BC. Get thee to a physio. Sounds a bit tendon-y to me, but only a physio can of course diagnose. My patella tendinitis only ached after a run, not that bad during.

All the best athletes get injured, so don’t despair!

Beachcomber66 profile image

Thanks Sadie-runs. If you don't get injured occasionally you are not trying hard enough? Sounds like my physio's motto!! You have had your share this year so I should stop moaning😊

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10 in reply toBeachcomber66

Oh no, moan away, it’s part of the healing process! I have had my fair share this year, that’s true. But, I can honestly say I have learned a lot from my injuries and time out, and have definitely come back stronger thanks to a really excellent physiotherapist. Some context: before I was injured I only ran a couple of sub-30 5ks and they almost killed me. Post injury I consistently run sub-30 5ks at parkrun - thanks to strength training and cross training, I think. I have also learned that getting injured is not the end of the world, just an opportunity to reflect and get stronger!

Keep us posted - hopefully it was just a one off thing, maybe your body was just giving you a little warning! All the best, BC.

Beachcomber66 profile image

Thanks W and S. I am a really impatient patient I am afraid. I will no doubt be told off for continuing the run! Just a minor interruption hopefully.

I totally understand i felt a twinge at five and a half kilometers yesterday in my calf but was determined to get to 6k 😀 i just love running even though i’m slow and old, it makes me feel free and young

Oh that's a pain in the bum BC. I hope you recover quickly. A physio visit might be just the thing. Mine says to only do strength exercises 3 times a week, with some rest in between. I'm pretty impatient about resting 'though. I wonder if it could be peroneal tendonitis ? I had something similar.

Googled it! That seems to be more ankle related Paulanloo. Thank heavens for physios eh? There is a whole load of injuries out there to choose from 😊

Thanks JP, I have put my sensible head on now; I just fancied running a New Year 10 miles, but stuff happens and we just have to get on with it.🤷‍♂️

Hopefully just a one off twinge, but definitely get to the physio if the pain is lingering. A short break won't do any harm - aoart from the obvious frustration that is! Much sympathy and hopfully a speedy recovery.

Hope you are feeling more comfortable, if not, physio seems like the answer.

They have the ability to identify body parts that I didn't know existed!. My own Googliagnosis didn't even come close!

Beachcomber66 profile image

It gives them a laugh! People sometimes came to me with pre googled problems (not medical); a question of people not knowing what they don’t know. 😊

Oh bugger BC, hope it turns out to be the something and nothing sort of issue that us runners deal with on a semi regular basis...fingers crossed a few days rest is all you need! 👍

I too am having a disappointing year end running wise...I was so looking forward to my 12 days off so I could get some decent runs in and joyously run in the daylight, but then a heavy Christmas cold hit and I haven't run in a whole week...a whole week god dammit! 😳 And think it may be a couple more before I'm fit for a little run...hopefully on New Years Day if not before! 🤞

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10

That is outrageous! Hard earned break and you have a cold! I always thought that the adrenaline drop made me vulnerable to bugs when I took a break. Mrs BC and I have been coughing and spluttering for three weeks.. but I have chosen to classify it as a head cold. My chest is considering an appeal though!

Hard life being a runner 😊

Sorry to hear that you are not injury free yet, it’s best to rest up, you’ll benefit in the end although it’s frustrating for you. Good luck

Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply toAgelesslass

Thanks. We have a couple of parties to go to today and tomorrow, so they will be a helpful diversion. I did my usual

exercises yesterday without difficulty, and I think think the beach dog walk helped. I won’t really know until I try to run. May be end of the week if I can hold out that long!

Thanks Deals1. Will probably let the physio take a look. No point in risking a long lay off when a half hour prod about will sort out what is happening. 👍
