Spot the deliberate mistake!!๐Ÿ˜ฌ

This was going to be a quicker 10 miles over my hilly route. Sadly some idiot stopped the watch at 16.04k instead of 16.1๐Ÿ˜. I must have been delirious! Operation rationalisation! I am pleased that I have managed to up my (nearly) 10 mile pace despite the hill start and it came at the end of an awful couple of days. I just had to get out and run and I now have that post shower glow which usually ends in my dropping asleep post run. I knew towards the end that I was in range of sub 2 hours and even did a "sprint" finish, and all on just one late morning bowl of porridge and a cup of tea! The final spurt was partly a reflection of the impending closing time at the cafe. I just made it for my usual coffee and brownie apres run! I look forward to reading about all my wonderful VRBs adventures at the GSR on Sunday and Tasha99 in York; note for GSR ; just don't forget the number of Ks in 10 miles! ๐Ÿคก ๐Ÿ˜‚

Oh noooo BC! Thatโ€™s the sort of thing Iโ€™d do! ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜… Amazing time though. Bet youโ€™re pleased with that, and I donโ€™t blame you sprinting for your coffee and brownie. Imagine if youโ€™d have been a couple of minutes late and the cafรฉ had been closed - the horror! ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜…

Thanks for the good wishes for Sunday. Iโ€™m so looking forward to seeing my VRBs there. Just a mini gentle trot for me tomorrow to stay limber. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

Well done Beachcomber66, how wonderful that you did a 10 mile to give us the confidence for Sunday. I havenโ€™t gone that far for a month now so Iโ€™m hoping that I didnโ€™t peak too soon and that the crowd will carry me along on Sunday .

It will be great to see my running buddies again too.

The point is I didn't ๐Ÿ˜Š. I have been building steadily towards another HM so this was just the next step on the way after last week's 12.5k. I don't care about the distance mistake bit really; all about building up stamina before I get too old (seriously) and learning how to manage hills. Good way to lose a kilo and a half though! I couldn't run at the same time as GSR because I am trying a new park run on Saturday. Whatever....looking forward to reports of he big day ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Have a great parkrun on Saturday. Itโ€™s nice to try a different one every now and then, and it will be your best time. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Looking at your 10k time you could beat my effort easily. Just a question of building up gradually. I think that the improvements get easier as you increase distance. 10k to 10 miles was much easier than 5k to 10k. Just go for it ๐Ÿ‘

Sadly Pippa died last year but we have a new mini schnauzer puppy called Sadie. Iโ€™ll post her pic at a park run. What leg strengthening exercises do you? I saw you mention this in a reply.

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10โ€ข in reply toOlney

My exercises came from a physio after I did a bit of damage to my calves through letting strength lag behind increasing distance. You can google them all; mine include star balance, eccentric heel dips, one legged calf raises, tip toe squats, hops, jumping from leg to leg, two leg jump with single leg landing, ankle stretches with a band, crab walk with band and lunges! Seems to work,Takes about 20

minutes. I guess everybody has different needs though.

No. I know other runners but they are not on the site. They are all lifelong runners and very accomplished, but supportive. I met a lady in the cafe the other day and she was wearing a Hardmoors Top.

Seriously impressive, even with an infuriating senior moment. What a nuisance! I found my recent 6km harder than I think I should, so you make my running seem to be in positively beginner territory. Oh well! It is lovely to see the progress of the others in the same cohort. Well done to you! And the pace! And the hills! Is your Garmin giving you an encouraging VO2 max for all this great running?

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10โ€ข in reply toover61andstilltrying

VO2 max likes long very slow runs (so low average heart rate) or quick (for me) 5ks. It hates the local hill runs ( maybe it measures heart rate v pace ...so it thinks I am less fit ) or quicker long runs. So Park Runs have raised VO2 max, but incorporating hills in longer runs has cancelled it out. Best VO2 max was on holiday in the Isles of Scilly. Slow hilly Runs (but not as steep as the local ones) worked well, but we walked miles everyday too. A two week workout!

over61andstilltrying profile image
over61andstilltryingGraduate10โ€ข in reply toBeachcomber66

Fascinating! You know that you are getting fitter but Mr VO2 max obviously hasn't caught up! I hadn't spotted all the patterns that you've noticed. Mine is being ridiculously kind to me and telling me that I am in the top 5% for my age group! Have to take any positives on offer, particularly as I shall become another year older tomorrow!

Forget my senior moment comment, I have stopped running various times forgetting what I was aiming for, but the reasoning of various repliers here put you at the 10 miles no problem! Well as long as we're rationalising:

1.

If you're going to four significant figures it's actually 16.09 km. 16.04 km is 99.69% of that. 99.7% accuracy is good enough for most people most of the time :)

2.

GPS is only accurate to within 10m for any given location so a total discrepancy of 50m over a run of that length isn't much.

3.

The missing 50 metres would take 23 seconds at that pace so you'd still be within the 2 hours for the exact distance. In fact as long as you didn't fall over while stopping your watch you probably walked more than 50 metres after that before the 2 hours were up.

Basically you ran ten miles in two hours. Don't let anybody say you didn't :) I ran 16km and claimed my 10 mile badge, nobody's taking it off me!
