I’m back (hopefully) with new specially made insoles.

I stopped running (mid Jul) as my ankle swollen. I went to chiropractor and found underlying issues including collapsed arches and ankles rolling inwards. On advice I ordered some specially made (and very expensive) insoles, which I’ve now received and been breaking in.

This morning was my first run. I wasn’t sure how far to go back so went back to C25k Wk6 Run 1. I was surprised that I found it really easy (before my furthest run was 11k) but I thought I would’ve lost more fitness. I did get a few pains around my ankle so didn’t push it too hard but hopefully due to getting used to the insoles rather than pain. Ankles not swollen up so fingers crossed I’m on the road to recovery and can get back to where I was and beyond. I really enjoyed the run this morning. The weather was perfect!

I also have fallen arches and my ankles roll in, the left is worse than the right. They went back 25 years ago when I used to run in a treadmill at the gym. And was one fk the reasons I stopped running then. I started again March 2018 shortly before retiring and graduated C25k in the May.

Im waiting for another appointment with MY Orthotist. He works at a hospital 40 miles away but visits ours once a month for appointment. He makes me custom insoles for my shoes which are a great help. But they do make my feet ache getting used to them.

My old ones are nearly falling to pieces as I hadn’t got round to replacing them after I retired thinking I wasn’t on my feet so much now. But now I am back working part time I think they need replacing and I’m going to ask about ones for running as I’ve never used them in my running shoes 🙄.

Hi, thanks for replying 😀 I’ve 2 pairs of insoles. One for day to day and one for running. The running ones are much harder and a have got quite a big hard heal. The casual ones are just sturdy. Now when I put shoes on without the insoles I can feel my shoes are sloping inwards probably because of how I was walking before, so don’t think I can do without them now. Good luck with getting yours. I hope they’re not too expensive.

My injuries were partly due to lack on insoles. Knee and ankle both ballooned and l nearly had to stop running altogether. Custom cut insoles for running and sturdy ones for walking took care of it and l haven't had injuries for over 2.5 years now. Best money ever spent.

Wow! That’s great to hear. I hope they work as well for me as they have for you 👍

They take some getting used to but what they basically did, they aligned the hips from where the balance reached its perfect middle spot. The weight was evenly distributed over the knees, and there you go, l ran like new. Oh, and that took care of lower back pain too. Some years later l felt no ill effects having covered the marathon distance so something, somehow worked out!

The chiropractor mentioned that I need to go back in a month and she’ll “realign me”. Sounds painful but I’m really hoping it all works out for me as it has for others including you. Thanks for sharing your experience. 😀

Good old 'realignment'. That's what my osteopath did a few times. That's all good stuff, don't worry.

That’s great that you managed to get them for free 🥳 as they really are very expensive but I figured running more convenient than the gym so over the long term hoping the investment will pay off. Hope yours are working well for you?

I am a year on from wearing in my (very expensive) insoles but I have to say they have been worth it, I was actually losing the ability to walk without pain before I got them. Build up slowly, I tried to do a long run a little before I was ready and had to get the bus home ☹️. But I managed my HM in May this year with no pain or blisters, the first time ever. Happy running.

That’s great to hear. Yes, I was trying not to overdo it today although it was such a lovely day and felt I could’ve done more but felt a bit of pain here and there so tried to be sensible. Thanks for sharing another positive experience with me 👍

Glad that you're back and thanks for sharing your post -it's good to hear other runners opinions on this as I don't know anyone else who's gone down this route. I have decided to find a local podiatrist to get my ankle issues sorted - high arches & bad over pronation due to hip/knee misalignment. I had orthotic soles made a long time ago but they were not full size & painful under the arches (plus only fitted in boots) so I'm hoping longer ones might work better in running shoes. Having time of work to go there and there £££s required is another matter entirely!!

Hope you get used to yours soon and have pain free happy runs! 🙂

Hi, thanks for your post. Third run tomorrow. I seem to have got used to lump under heel quite quickly and actually comfortable when I run although my back feels strange for first time. Like it’s going to click out of position- hopefully temporary 😬.

Hope you manage to get your issues sorted. 👍
