Am I mad!!

Hi. Having graduated from C25K with a Parkrun on Saturday I have madly been talked into signing up for a 10K at the end of February!! What’s worse is that it has some hills and so far I have only run in the flat.

I wanted something that continued to motivate me but I wonder if I have bitten off too much too soon.

Well done on completing C25k. 👏. If you consolidate for a few weeks you will be able to then follow Ju jus plan. You have plenty of time. Go for it. 🏃🏻‍♀️😊

Sorry I think I replied to myself rather than you!

You’ve plenty of time to get to 10k. And as far as hills are concerned, I think if you can let yourself go a bit on the downhill sections, this can make up for the climbs - provided they’re gentle gradients not Tour de France mountain sections.

Thank you. I need to stop panicking and just take the whole thing slowly reminding myself that I couldn’t run for 1 min 9 weeks ago.

I think it’s just easier now with the light mornings and evenings. When it gets dark I will just have to drive to town where there are lights. Just a bit of planning is needed during the winter.

Thanks for the support.

Thank you. I had planned to do that with time in mind before I madly signed up for the 10K. Just need to work out now the best way to do it i.e. still follow the time and then concentrate on the distance.

Also I need so do some hilly runs as well at some point.

I’m not yet doing 5K in 30 mins. I was just under 36 at the Parkrun.

Your time for 5K is fine. Better than mine by 4 minutes but running 10k isn’t about time necessarily so just follow the plan. I did Ju jus plan on time first as I was really slow and didn’t have the stamina to do more but once I’d done 60 minutes it wasn’t so difficult to get to 10k.

in reply toKnittingrunner

Thanks that’s really helpful. I will do the same.

If you're doing it with a friend (someone must have pressured you into it!) You'll be fine and you'll have a great time.

There's plenty of time and hills are not as bad as people fear 👍🏻😉😁

Thank you, they are trying to recruit a team but I know he is already a good runner. Anyway, I’ll be fine, lots of support and encouragement on here. I love reading other peoples experiences.

Not so sure about the hills though 😂.

We’re all mad... it really helps out there 🤣

You’ve got bags of time to be 10k ready, even 10k hills ready. Don’t worry, it’s just the same as C25K... one run at a time with gentle progression. Have a wonderful journey to that event.

in reply toUnfitNoMore

Thank you. I suppose it is just the same and I do have much longer, I just have to believe I can do it.

Retirement is strongly recommended, but not always an option 😀

Indeed!

Fantastic! There’s nothing like a race to focus the mind, and now you know there are hills, it’s your chance to find some to train on! February gives you plenty of time and you’ll smash it! 👏👏👏

in reply tocheekychipmunks

Thank you. You all make me feel like I really can do it. No problem with the hills, I’m surrounded by them. 😊

The leap from 5 to 10K is nowhere near as great as the leap from couch to 5K. If anything I enjoy 10K more than 5K now as the toxic 10 is a smaller part of the run. You’ll have plenty of miles in your legs come February.

Thank you, that’s so encouraging to hear!

Loads of time...x Hills are fantastic...they are character building:) I have LOTS of character...I love hillsx

in reply toOldfloss

Thank you. I’m yet to be convinced about the hills!! A couple of years ago I got talked into doing Ride the Night cycle challenge. I went from not being able to cycle to doing a 65 mile bike ride at night (aged 50). I can honestly say the hills made me want to cry but I did it.

I will have to remind myself of that when running the hills 😂.

Note to self - find friends who don’t make you sign up for mad things OR be grateful for them because they show you what you can achieve and you meet lovely encouraging people on forums like this.

Thanks everyone.
