Since graduating in March I’ve kept up running but it’s been sporadic, so this week I thought I’d work through the C25K + podcasts with Laura for motivation. But I didn’t realise that you have to run at 150 steps per minute - I can’t do it. Are my legs too short? They just can’t hit the ground that slowly. Laura was saying don’t bounce, but I was trying to stay in the air for longer, extending my stride to take that long didn’t seem comfortable either. Is there a technical issue I don’t appreciate?
I naturally seem to go at about 170 to 180, not fast, a fast run for me is 5k in 37 minutes. But with 150 steps per minute (well my attempt at it) I did a 9 minute kilometre. I found 160 a bit more comfortable.
Is there something here I just don’t understand?

Can you run on the spot at 150? Start there and step a bit further each time to fit, perhaps?
I struggle at 150 and 165 creases me, just as in week 2 at 90 seconds did. Once upon a couple of months ago. Could you run at that speed on the spot? Perhaps start there and extend your stride just a little each time to fit the beat? Just a thought!
My fastest, and only 5K was 47 minutes, so I am not in your league. I think my legs are too long to fit in 160. Let alone 170/180. Just enjoy your running.
But then , my fastest, and only 5K was 47 minutes. Just enjoy your running and get somewhere near the number. I find Laura doesn’t really mind, as long as you try.
I fully understand - I can’t get my cadence down to anything like those levels. When running with the OH, I have to cut my stride length down - I’ve tried dropping cadence and using my usual stride length but it just doesn’t work. And I don’t recommend doing anything that feels unnatural - that can lead directly to the IC ☹️
Thank you for all your input - I’ll do the rest of the podcasts this week and see how I get on. I’m still a little confused - is it a benefit to be able to run at different cadences? When I started this running lark I thought you just ran - and it was a triumph if you could - but actually there is so much more to it.
