Newcastle Children's Cancer Run 2019, race report.

Well, something a bit different for me this week, leaving the roads for a trail run through Gosforth Park in aid of the Children's Cancer Trust.

Despite living only a couple of miles from the venue I hadn't previously heard of it but apparently today was the 37th running with 9000 runners and twice that many spectators attending.

There were runs for all ages from 1k up to 5 miles staggered across a 3 hour period and the route took us through the woods of Gosforth Park and Nature Reserve with the last km down the finishing straight of Newcastle racecourse with people cheering us on from the other side of the rails as if we were so many tired nags.

For once I wasn't bothered about my time, just as well as I had to dodge tree roots and wandering children, pick up a couple of kids who seemed no more than toddlers and stop for a couple of chats.

Overall trail runs won't be for me but it was a superb event for a wonderful charity.

Actually a week off next week!!! before what should be a spectacular one, the Bamburgh 10k at the start of June.

Run happy, run safe.

PS, Does my route look like an angry reindeer as Jan suggested on Strava? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Well done to you Chris on running that 8K trail run, you enjoyed your run today and that is the main thing, as you say trail running is a bit different from running on the roads, you can now look forward to the Bamburgh 10k in June,

The graphics kind of looks like an angry reindeer πŸ‘πŸ˜Š

It’s funny how we were completely oblivious to running things before running ourselves. That one sounds like a fun run with all ages taking part. Well done chris

If you rotate it 90 degrees clockwise it could be an angry Mary Poppins.

Ha, fab run Chris, mixing things up a bit with a trail run...and dodging children!πŸ˜†

Love the image of everyone finishing down the straight at the horse track!🐴

Bet you galloped....

Well, yes, I do think it's an angry reindeer in a dress, shaking his fist! Maybe I've had to much sun! 😎xxx

Enjoy your break...before your next event! 😊xxx

I love trail running but I know they’re not for everyone. It is hard to run fast on them and tripping is a given. What a great cause though and sounds like a fun low-key no pressure kind of event.

It was great as a one off, every standard of runner and kids and dogs everywhere!!!

Sounds like a great run Chris and for a fantastic charity. Always good to ring the changes!

Bamburgh sounds a good one.

I must pluck up the courage....

You would love one of these organised events, yes the majority are a good standard (sub 55 for 10k) but there are all sorts and standards there, everyone is friendly and you get to see lovely places, I'm going to end up doing about 12 this year.

Haha yes, I see the angry reindeer! 😠 🦌 πŸ˜…

Well done Chris, what an adventure and what a wonderful cause! Good for you. πŸ˜€πŸ‘πŸƒπŸŽ‰πŸ…πŸ‘Š

Wow 9000 runners - that's a big event! I love the greenery of trail runs but the trip hazards are definitely scary. Well done for remaining upright πŸ˜€

To be fair the 9000 were spread over 3 hours, wouldn't have worked getting them through the narrow wood trails!!

linda9389 profile image
linda9389Graduate10 in reply to ChrisAllen1

I was imaging the woods swarming with folk!

It does look like a crazed reindeer!! 🀣

Great day out! I'm interested in why you don't think trails are for you though.... trails bring me so much joy 😁

But "events" put me off 🀣

ChrisAllen1 profile image
ChrisAllen1Graduate10 in reply to GoGo_JoJo

I just enjoy more the feeling of a smooth ride on the roads, hard to explain, just a personal preference thing I guess.

GoGo_JoJo profile image
GoGo_JoJoGraduate10 in reply to ChrisAllen1

No, I can get that. Certainly has its' benefits. Likewise I get bored if a route is too samey 🀣

I was there too with family son 10 daughter 17 wife and I did 5k in respectable 35 and 37 mins all for a great cause. This is our 4th and it’s a great local event. Course is muddy slippery tree rooty to test your stability and this distracts you nicely plus drumming bands brass bands and a furlong finish! Took home medals Greggs goodies and a sense of satisfaction- look out for the children’s cancer bike ride 30 June Newcastle quayside

Ah that's great to know another forum runner was there, do you do many other events?
