Breathing from mouth?

Hello everyone, I don't find any problem breathing while running. Only thing I notice is I breathe from mouth, and not sure if this is right technique? Should I be breathing from nose instead? Thanks!

Loads of conflicting advise on this, if you find your current breathing rhythm comfortable I would stick to it, A tip I read on tinternet is run flat out at the end of a run to out of breath and when you come to a stop monitor your body’s instinctive breathing pattern as it recovers

Thanks Tony, when I come to stop after fast run in the end, I inhale and then exhale in 2 goes :)

There is all manner advice about this and every other aspect of running.

I’ve always breathed in and out through my mouth when I run. Try not to worry about it, just do what comes naturally.

Yes Jay, I thought breathing by nose is more beneficial but I am not comfortable doing it while running and some other comments suggests the same, so I think I am good. Tag is for replying to the post :)

As long as I'm still breathing at all at the end then I'm happy. The mouth for me.

Unless you really want to get in the next Olympic squad, just do what comes naturally.

Exactly can't do it with nose while running at all :)

Mouth all the way for me. If I start faffing about with different methods, my runs get affected. Mouth breathing is instinctive for me and that’s the way it’s going to stay. I’d go with what feels natural for you Priyanka. 😀

I recommend 'The Oxygen Advantage' by Patrick McKeown. He has coached elite athletes and also runs clinics to help asthmatics. He is an advocate of nasal breathing.

In his book, he provides scientific evidence of a link between over-breathing and heart irregularities and has a theory that unexpected heart failure during/after marathons may be caused by over-breathing. It's impossible to over-breathe if you use your nose.

More positively, breathing through the nose warms the air, adds moisture plus nitric oxide – which in the bloodstream relaxes the arteries allowing them to get oxygen where it is needed faster – as a vasodilator it has the same effect as drinking beetroot juice/taking beetroot capsules.

I would say that nasal breathing is a good way of regulating your pace equivalent to 'able to hold a conversation'.

I have been breathing through my nose (all the time, not just on runs) for the past two weeks and have seen my resting heart rate fall and my VO2max increase – basically achieving the same times with less cardiovascular effort.

It varies from person to person—I breathe through my nose on all runs but fast ones, it's how I measure effort 😄 If I have to breathe through my mouth then I know I'm going too fast for a training run so I dial it back a bit. For races and threshold runs though I just can't force enough air through my nose to support my harder running, so it's mouth breathing all the way 😂

What a way to measure effort👏😂 I will try this once

Mouth for me - I don't feel I can get enough air through my nose! 😀

You think kids analyse it when happily running around? Nope, and neither should you. For as long there’s enough oxygen in your lungs you’re good. Once you start training for the Olympics your personal team will suggest the best options but for now you should simply focus on running through fun. :)
