Struggling with breathing

Following injury and illness I have been doing 4/5k runs. Today I decided to start bridge to 10k from the beginning again. 6 k done although really struggling with my breathing, felt like I was dying by the end of it! Have an appointment with the doctor at the end of the month for more tests as blood count not quite right so perhaps this has something to do with it, or I just need to build distance back up.

Poor you but well done restarting your journey to 10k. As you say it could be your blood count but it could also be something as simple as going too fast for too long in this heat. There’s also a load of pollen about at the moment. Slow down, relax, enjoy the run and hopefully the next one will be a little easier. Happy running 🤗

Great you've started the magic plan again . I agree with what Grannyhugs says. Also if you are a bit anemic that could affect your breathing also.

Or maybe none if these things and like you say , just about building back up. Good luck 🤗🤗

Forgot to ask, have you had a few rounds of golf yet?😊

Yes thanks. Managed a couple with my husband. Great to be back, just have too fit in around runs as not able to do both on the same day yet. 🤣

I wish you the best with your upcoming tests. Don't worry too much yet with this run in isolation. See how you feel and your breathing is after a few runs. Factor in weather and humidity too. You've been going well so this may well be a blip and you'll be back 🌞

Hi Womanholfer,

My advise would just be to take it nice and slowly. I usually try to focus more on my breathing rather than my running. I try to breathe in time to my running steps ( in through my nose for 4 paces and out through my mouth for 4 paces). This really helps me and makes a big difference to ensure I am breathing normally and taking in enough oxygen rather than just taking smaller, shallow breaths and forgetting to breathe properly.

Might be worth a try to see if it helps you too? Also, maybe don't push yourself too hard if you are still recovering from an illness (although I know you probably want to). I have learnt that our bodies are very good at telling us when we are over doing it!

Take care and good luck! 🙂

Thank you. I struggle with 4 breaths so do 3. I have been going slower and my last 2 runs were a bit easier. Hope you have a good next run. 😀
