Just in case you missed it, a new challenge series starts tomorrow and runs until May. First is 15k in January (so one run for some of you 😂) and the series goes up to 60k in May... complete any and you go into a draw for Nike gear... first month is their new shoes, which I believe will be neutral pronation. Complete all 5 for a chance to win a trip to Nike HQ in Oregon... maybe meet Coach Bennett and Co? Achievements for every month completed if you need a little extra motivation.
Not posting this on C25K as distance shouldn’t matter there.
Have a great evening and a happy running 2019 guys.

My friend is looking at ultra schedules for May... April is 42k and he’s going to London, so if he can find the right run in May he’s intending to do each challenge in one run... always good to know I’m not the craziest guy in my friendship circle 😂
Maybe we will find out one day... I think he does it mainly for the sausage rolls... he runs serious until London and then it’s about earning beer and food tokens 😂
He’s booked a Jersey ultra and hotel for the weekend... but has yet to announce this to his wife. I suggested he says he’s whisking her away for a romantic weekend and then announced he was off for a little recovery run. Think it’s 16 miles of lots of hills followed by a very flat “easy” 20 miles apparently. He’s not up for the 43 miles a day for two weeks one I found, and that’s self sufficient, so I can only conclude he’s in it for the pastries at the refreshment tables!
I think the jersey run says keep the sea on your left and you can’t get lost.
Oh 36 miles! He might be gone a while then! 😂 I’ve only just sussed that they do seem to like the Ultra’s in the Channel Islands. I did have what it is explained to me mind. 🤯🤣❤️
Do you know if that involves using an intermediate app of some sort, or is there a direct way to achieve it UnfitNoMore? 🤔
I’ve heard of apps being used, but that they only work for a short time before Nike (?) disabled them? My husband has an Apple Watch, which does feed data directly into the Nike app, but as far as I’m aware Apple and Nike have some sort of agreement, and Nike do not collaborate with Garmin?
Yeah... in the NRC app settings you go to partners and link the two accounts... it’s one way traffic as Nike don’t share, but they do take data from partners... as far as I can see it’s a one time process and automatic after that.
The third party apps were using an exploit to get the data that Nike closed off when the new EU data protection laws came into effect in the spring/summer... but as Garmin have partnered I would imagine it will always work.
I believe the Apple agreement is only about branding, so only Apple Watch can have a Nike+ version... not that it’s any different to the standard one really, you can download the app yourself and buy the straps 😂. Apple may be behind the non-sharing of data too, I dunno but I know it’s always been a big thing with them, they were much harder to work with than Microsoft 😂
I’m also fairly sure Garmin and Apple are partnered at some level.
Thanks - so it sounds like I could feed my run data into the Nike+ app for challenges like this. I’ll look into that. My Nike+ app thinks I never run and keeps sending me encouragement! 😂😂
Sadly I’m more likely to sometimes want to try the Nike+ guided runs that people have recommended, but I think I’ll just have to pick a dry day and use my phone app, while starting my Garmin up on the watch too to keep my run data together on Strava. (I used Runkeeper before getting the Garmin, which is basically all old data I no longer see now.)
They could be recorded... they will play without movement and with music so could be played like any other music file... only two runs are currently distance based so wouldn’t work.
So far connecting the Nike+ app to Garmin Connect hasn’t worked out too well. I’ve done it, but it’s only giving me my achievements and total runs / distance rather than details of my actual runs. And as I’d forgotten my password for Garmin, to give Nike+ permission I ended up having to reset the password, then logging out and re-pairing my Garmin to my phone...😂😂😂
I use NRC on two phones and also have it on my iPad for easy planning... I have seen in the past where one bit syncs up and the run appears in my history some time later, so maybe it needs a bit of time. When I’m on a speed session I use my old phone as I need to pause and I pass a bit, and on regular ones I use my new phone as I don’t need to hold it. I don’t get on with watches in general and haven’t worn one since junior school... so a little reluctant to buy either Apple Watch or a running one.
You could just add runs manually to complete a challenge if all else fails.
I’m the opposite! I only really wear the big Garmin watch for running, but after killing off a pair of Bluetooth earbuds and being terrified I’d kill my phone on my first very wet run, I couldn’t wait to have a waterproof watch with GPS in for distance! 😃
My phone stays happily dry in a ziplock bag now, if it goes running at all. And starting Parkrun with just a watch button to press is so much easier than starting to run while trying to start an app on my phone then zipping the thing into a pocket on a running belt!😂
There is that. Last time I wore a watch I slept in it and had a band of blisters on my wrist the next morning, and I’ve avoided them since... have a few in a drawer that were Christmas and birthday presents from my old man in recent years, he’d forgotten about my reaction bless him, and never notices that I don’t wear them... maybe I can open a shop one day 😂
If you want a cheaper Garmin for waterproofness and GPS, but aren’t bothered about heart rate (which they aren’t as good at as Fitbits anyway), have you thought about borrowing one and seeing how you got on with it worn over the top of a long sleeved thermal top, just for while running?
That should give you no skin contact. Lots of people wear the things over the top of layers in colder weather anyway. It’s tricky getting to them underneath multiple layers!
Thanks UNM- I hadn’t seen this. January sounds just about doable so might have a go at that and then see where we go from there. Never say never though😊. Happy New Year- and happy running 🏃♂️🏃♂️
Happy new year... I’m gonna be chipping away at the 15k as it’s currently looking at being 5 runs for me, but hopefully I’ll be back on 5k at least for February
Just ran my first 18k - so January’s sorted. The NRC app still isn’t showing many old runs yet, but it picked up straightaway that I’d done the Jan challenge and put me on the leaderboard, so the link to Garmin Connect is working! Thanks UnfitNoMore ! My speedy hubby has entered too, so I guess that doubles our chances of the final prize (you can take a friend!) 😃❤️
Gosh, only starting week 8 on Monday. I'm so close to finishing C25K.
I'm also wondering what happens after I've completed this. lol. I do want to continue running for fitness because I'm actually enjoying the app. As you know, I was sick last minute and lecturing my body to hurry up so I can run! lol
The best thing to do to continue your running, in my opinion, is to always have at least one goal ahead of you. Maybe it’s a parkrun in x minutes, maybe it’s a 5k event, maybe it’s 10k, or maybe it’s to be a in a certain size of clothing in a few months. I generally have 3 goals at a time, one I may do any time, on that’s a few weeks or months ahead and one that is “one day.” I know I’ll get to them all and when I get near one I start looking for another.
The challenges in the Nike app have come at a great time for me as I come back from injury... that 60k in May is just 3x5 k a week, so it’s doable, but keeps you on it.
Injuries and illness are always annoying... we can run, so we need to... how fast did that change?
You’re doing really well on C25K and the thing is, when you started it 5k and 30 minutes was impossible... so you can achieve any realistic goal you set yourself now, and in time can even beat some more impossible stuff. You’ve become a runner, but it’s more than that, you’re a stronger person, less likely to quit, fit enough to do lots of other things, and (I get the impression) you’re a happier person too... and that’s the perfect set of results.
Thank you UnfitNoMore that's I initially what I was thinking. I am checking out park runs or any 5 k events. I don't want to grasp anything that's unachievable. I would rather keep something that is.
I Row on weekends and think this will be something to keep up my fitness plan. I'm already thinking of a plan on how to workout a regimen that won't kill me or make me lose interest. Love the jogging so far. And really enjoying it each run. Lifts my spirits up after each run.
I miss watching the rowing teams train on the river... I’ve never done it, but boatrace day and Olympic rowing finals are a big deal in my house! I’d love to have a go one day, and I know I’ll be useless at it... but it would be a great thing to have a go at. Not much of it in the Peak District 😂
Setting unrealistic goals can be counter productive, so I hear you there... if you’re working towards something you can edge up on and achieve then you’ll keep working at it... I’m aware I won’t break 2 hours for a marathon... heck if I break 4 I’d be doing backflips for a year... so my only goal is to complete one, that I know I can do... then at the finish line I can decide if it’s something I want to do again, it never was but I can see that changing.
Parkrun is ideal as you can just go and enjoy the run, there really is no pressure... and it’s there every week if you’re not ready on a given date, so an injury on the way to it doesn’t matter... it’s a great way to get into 5k running and some are hilly, adding more endurance than you’d need for most 5k road races.
