Ugh! I’m not ready 😢❄️

Why?!! It’s coming down fairly hard right now, calling for 5 cm today and a couple cm every day this week 😢. Maybe I should take snowshoes for my trail run in Friday 😂

Looks like the ninja runner might be returning earlier this year.

I had initially planned to run tonight, but I might bump it until tomorrow.....or use the elliptical instead.

Wow Allie...take care if it gets icy!😊x

I will! I'm having flashbacks to last January when I had a nasty fall on the ice. I'm going to skip my run tonight since it's right around freezing and quite slick.

You did do that extra Recovery run...so no worries😆😊xx

Oh no! Not yet! No signs of that stuff here (north of GTA). I’m not ready for it either! I’m enjoying fall running.

I'm glad you're spared so far. I'm hoping this isn't here to stay but the long range is pretty cool. I was really enjoying my fall running....

It’s on the Toronto news this evening. Looks nasty in Calgary.

Ya, they seem to get nailed worse than we do lately. Poor runswithdogs .

Whooeee. I was sick last week and was going to go for a run Tuesday after work. 30+ centimeters of snow. Most of our staff were sent home at 10am, loads couldn't make it to the office. I managed to get out yesterday for a run. Some unshovelled sidewalks, but the weather was great and it was quite beautiful. Sunny. Just deep. Wonder what parkrun will be like Saturday, it's melting like crazy. Also wonder if I'll need to rake my lawn this year or if that's a spring project now.

Could be a mucky mess! I'm not a fan if this in between weather - it's snowing and hovering around freezing again - could be an icy mess tomorrow. I prefer to run first thing in the morning, but might have to wait for the afternoon and hope for the sun to come out....or I'll run in the coulee in front of my house. I think it might be less slippery than the asphalt.

It's amazing how once we start running in the winter we become experts at local microclimates, ice types etc. Hope your route is clear.

Blimey, it's either snow or baking sun over there, where are the months of drizzly in-between?!!

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Fishypieface

Sometimes it feels like we only have 2 seasons. Spring and fall are pretty short in my neck of the woods!

AlMorr profile image

Snow already, its only the beginning of October, unless you are in New Zealand where it is now spring and yes there is snow in spring. In the UK this year we had up to a foot of snow in some places at the beginning of spring in March, wrap up well when you are out 🏃 running with your snow⛄ shoes😊

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to AlMorr

Fingers crossed it's not here to stay. We usually get an early dump of snow that passes shortly but our long range forecast has us staying around zero so tough to say. I may have to get some new ice grippers early this year.

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsGraduate10

Yikes! Seems so early for snow (but normal for Canada?!) I shall never complain about British weather again. (But maybe a bit in January). Stay warm, Sask. x

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

We were lucky, we missed the snow that hit Alberta a couple weeks ago but there usually is an early scare every year. It's always the question of will it stay or will it go.....

I know my hubby is happy. He bought a new snowmobile for my son this year so he's hoping for lots of snow, early on, that sticks around. I'm not quite ready yet ☹️

Oh dear... 💗

I’m thinking of getting some Yaktrax Run grips for my trainers for the British winter. Would those help? ❤️

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to mountaindreamer

I was using just some cheap little ice grippers from Costco that worked surprisingly well, but I've worn through them. I have looked at the yaktrax in the past and I believe I can get them locally, so I may be trying them this year. I'll have to see what I can find in town.

mountaindreamer profile image
mountaindreamerGraduate10 in reply to SaskAlliecat

We’ve got some cheap ones, but I found those kept flipping off my walking shoes when I attempted using them instead of my crampons! The Yaktrax seem to strap on, so I’m hoping they’ll work better... I like the look of the combination of coils and studs on the running version. I’m hoping that will cover variable pavement conditions (ie ice vs snow, though I’m not sure how they’d fair on cleared sections).

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to mountaindreamer

That was my only concern with them as well. The pathway I run on all winter is often cleared in parts so over half my run may be on cleared paths.

runswithdogs profile image
runswithdogsGraduate10 in reply to mountaindreamer

I have a pair of Yaktrax. They are okay on cleared sections. Not great, not terrible. Previous winters I waffled every outing on how much clear pavement vs how much ice and made a different call every day. Last winter I finally dropped cash on proper winter running shoes and bough a pair of Icebugs on sale. I've been impressed so far, and I think I'll get several years of use of them to justify the big price tag.

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to runswithdogs

I just checked out their website. Those sound interesting! Definitely something to consider. It would be nice to not have to worry about what to wear on your feet. Looks like there are no retailers in Saskatchewan, but may have to look into it next time we go visit family in Edmonton.

runswithdogs profile image
runswithdogsGraduate10 in reply to SaskAlliecat

I got mine through Sportchek on a massive sale. I think they were half off. They're very stiff to run in, but you adjust after a run or two.

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to runswithdogs

Good to know; they didn't list them on their store locator. I'll keep an eye out for sure!

Aaahhhhggh! Just kidding :) Maybe no trails, but how about road running? I may invest in some decent spikes this year. No white stuff here yet. Reminds me I’ve got to switch my tires soon

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Decker

Hubby changed over our tires this weekend, so we were ready for it; doesn't mean I'm happy about it .,, but at least I stayed on the road 😂. Fingers are still crossed we can hit the trails. Will have to see how much snow sticks around. At least my running partner lives at the lake and will know if it is worth the drive out or not.

At least you were ready for it! Maybe it wont all stick around like you say. May as well embrace it if it does

I'm in Saskatchewan in Canada. Looks like Calgary and the Rocky Mountains are in a complete winter wonderland, while we just had a baby snowfall 😆.

One of my childhood memories from Alberta was opening the back door just to see a wall of snow from top to bottom where it had drifted against the house.

The snow always seemed to be very deep but probably because I was very small!

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to SlowLoris

That was how it was when we first moved here, but the last few years we've just been very cold and quite dry. Maybe this will be the year we get a huge amount of slow again. I know the farmers can use it, but it would've been better if it could've held off until all the crops were in the bin 😟

runswithdogs profile image
runswithdogsGraduate10 in reply to SlowLoris

I can say, from Alberta from two days ago, your childhood memories are still correct. I woke up to 30+ centimeters of snow. Thankfully it's melting fast now. I like my winter running, but I like it a little later in the year :)

Be safe Sask..& wrap up well, won’t be long before it’s here too, but nothing like you experience, yet our country goes to pot!!! Maybe some skis??!!! X

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Mummycav

The sun was out today and the snow is already starting to melt off the roads and pathways. They're quite wet and we're right around freezing so I think I'll skip today's outside run as well. I'm a little gun-shy around ice after my nasty fall last year. We got off lucky compared to our neighbours to the West. Calgary got 30-40 cm of snow 😳. People were stranded on the highways for hours! Our roads were slick but nothing like what they experienced. We used to live there and I don't miss that part of being closer to the mountains.

Ooooh I’m not sure how I would cope, but it sure does look beautiful!! This will be my first autumn/winter running. So I’m hoping for the best. Have a really good run if you get out tomorrow. Put the winter weather on notice, you’re here too!! 💪🏽😁😍❤️

SaskAlliecat profile image
SaskAlliecatGraduate10 in reply to Fabulous450

My running partner is getting over the flu so my plan is a run in town tomorrow instead of my wonderful trails at the lake - not as enjoyable but given my race is a week away, I better get out there. I guess hill repeats on the pathway behind the golf course is in order.
