I think I have broken myself!!

Hey up running friends!

Well, it was bound to happen. After my lovely but tough hilly 5k in Lyme Park on Monday, everything really hurt. So I did what any sensible(!) person would do of course, and went out for another run on Wednesday, thinking I just needed a recovery run to loosen everything up.

Nope!

The 6k was probably my slowest pace ever, because everything hurt. Running through pain is never a good idea, and by the end of the run I certainly was, and it wasn't easing with the exercise, so I've been resting since then, well apart from doing some of those calf raise thingies that Sadie-runs recommended. Funny side note, I managed to embarass my 10 year old daughter yesterday at the park, by standing on the bottom step up to the slide, doing calf raises.

I also saw the podiatrist finally, because I wanted her wisdom on insoles for my supination. She was great, quickly she convinced me that the off-the-shelf ones weren't quite right and may actually have been contributing to my pain (doh!) but she did modify the stock insoles of my Clouds with some extra support, whilst the new insoles come.

So - generally positive, I didn't get all the running done that I wanted to with my week off, but I feel I've learned a lot, so it's all good.

Happy running folks!

Neil

Glad you're 'fixing' yourself now Neill. I think a break can do wonders for my runs and I bet your next run will be great. I too have a tendency to think "a short run will loosen out my knee, calf etc.". Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. As long as you weren't blocking your daughter's high speed descent, the slide sounds like a good 'step' for calf raises ;)

Can't believe I've not replied to any of these replied yet! You're first, so you're first on the list :) Thank you for your encouragement, I suspect I may have just made matters worse by the 6K I did last Wednesday, still you live and learn! I'm hoping to get out in the rain tomorrow for a *short* run :)

Sorry to hear that Neil, but it sounds like you are on the right track . I wonder how many injuries Lyme park creates for the uninitiated ?

in reply toDexy5

Thank you Dexy, I appreciate that. Plenty of injuries, I'm sure. It's brutal as far as I can see. Lovely, beautiful, but brutal :)

Come down to Southsea- 2nd easiest according to a certain website. However, it does depend on the wind. It’s blowing a hooley out there at the moment. 🌬🌬🏃‍♂️

Same here actually! Planning a test run this morning down the Middlewood Way which is fairly sheltered... let’s see how that goes :)

Aw Neil, you are not totally broken, and you are fixable and getting right onto it! Glad the podiatrist was able to help. As for embarrassing your daughter, that just means you are doing your job as her dad right!

You sound so positive in your post, and I am so pleased. I really am of the opinion that if you run regularly, you will get niggles etc, and the key is how we manage them. It is annoying though, when you have been on such a good streak, to be a bit curtailed. Like you say, it is what we learn from these instances that is important, and will build us to be better runners in the end.

Hey Sadie-runs , thanks so much for your encouragement, and I'm so sorry I left it so long to reply. I'm feeling considerably better now, and have been doing loads of those calf raises, as I think both my shins and calf muscles need some help. Oh those calf raises off a step are brutal aren't they? Still, I feel like they are doing me good, and may even help my ankles, which have felt a bit wrecked since LymeGate (which is what I'm calling it now :P)

Talk to you soon, Neil xxx

Ooh feel better soon - and don’t worry about embarrassing your daughter. That’s what they’re there for 😆 🏃‍♂️

in reply toDizzysmum17

Thank you, yes, embarrassing daughters is definitely fun. My youngest generally doesn't care what people think, she's great like that, so I'm chuffed I managed to embarass her lol

Sounds like a fix isn't too far off. Your daughter being embarrassed made me laugh - in my experience it doesn't take much from a parent to embarrass a ten year old but it's definitely part of the job 😂.

Hope you get some less painful running in this week.

in reply toDebJogsOn

Awwww thank you! It's been a few days, but I feel that a gentle and probably soggy run would be in order. I'll post how I got on :)

Yep it’s all good. Enjoy your next run 👍

Thank you misswobble , feel a bit lost having not run for over a week, but I'm hoping to get out for a short and probably rainy one tomorrow :)

Tut tut Hidden ...going for another run??!!!!! Now you know that’s naughty!! But at least, with some rest, broken can be fixed so hopefully you’ll be back to your running best soon...😉

in reply toMummycav

Yup, that's me. Naughty! To be fair I thought another run might just sort me out. I was wrong this time, but maybe tomorrow's run will be OK? :)

I was planning a run yesterday but I ran out of time & then the weather was my enemy, so I’m in my kit & hopefully will be able to squeeze one in before dinner time!! My ankle/Achilles is back to normal so might be able to try for a bit of a longer run 🤞🏻

in reply toMummycav

I’m waiting for a little break in the weather myself, then I’m just going to run. Somewhere. Not sure where :P hope yours goes ok!!

I have no idea where I’m off either...but that’s what I like, I’ve thought of a route but it might take me too far from home if owt happens to my ankle coz even though it feels ok it’ll only take them gremlins a quick twang and it could all go pear shaped!! 😮
