A Tale of Strava Woes, PB’s and New Shoes...

Don’t believe what you read!!! Not on Strava anyway...although to be fair it may be the GPS signal and/or the Apple Watch that is to blame, rather than Strava itself. Either way it messed up.🤬

What am I on about?

So today I went out in the late afternoon sunshine (quite a bit cooler than recently) for a 5k run, determined to have a crack at my PB’s for 5k and 1k.

So I did it, and...

...ran a 5k in about 32m 30s, which is a whole 3 minutes faster than I’d done before😎

...pause for applause from audience 😉

... and ran one of the km in 6m 10s, about 20 seconds faster than previous 1km PB😎

...pause for applause etc

But annoyingly Strava again missed the first few minutes of my run, so that it says I did a 28min run of 5.1km (trust me I didn’t) and meanwhile it has ignored this run on its record of my 5k PB time.

Hey ho... no big deal, bottom line is I’ll just need to go out and do it all again 😝

And given the fact that Strava keeps doing this to me, I think I’ll try a) starting up Strava during the warm-up walk rather than when I start running (to give it time to catch up?) and b) picking a different start point as maybe that’s a poor GPS area. We’ll see.

Anyoldhoo - aside from the Strava rant, how was the run?

And more importantly, how were the...

NEW SHOES!!!🏃🏼‍♂️🏃🏼‍♂️🏃🏼‍♂️🏃🏼‍♂️

Yep, earlier today I finally went in and had my GA done, and emerged with a new pair of road shoes, and this was their first outing. (And yes the ritual post with pic will come when I get a chance)

So clearly (given the PB’s) they worked OK, much lighter and more cushioned than the trail shoes I’ve been running in so far. And no blisters/aches/pains to report, so all good. They’ll be out again next on Saturday (extreme weather warning permitting!) when I go running with my sister for the first time.🏃🏼‍♂️🏃🏼‍♀️

That’ll actually be the first time I’ve been out with anyone else, should be interesting!

As for today’s run, I was pushing it right from the start, so the usual Happy Pace with its steady breathing never arrived, but I managed to keep going (and pushing the pace) right through to the end... just 😊

But after a hot day in town getting the vital running shoe shopping done, it was just great to get straight back out there - I am really loving this whole running malarkey, in case you hadn’t noticed!😀😀😀

Wouldn’t it be nice to have an accurate route measuring app?!

Gait analysis plus shoes is very exciting indeed! I’m trying to convince myself I need trail shoes now 😂

Well done on your progress so far!

Thanks, yeah really chuffed with today’s run - and those shoes mean I am now up to three pairs of running shoes since I started C25k in April, so I am kind of buying a new pair every month or two 😊

Aren’t they supposed to last 3-500 miles? 😂

Great work Hoagy! Frustrating, I know.

Dunno your routine atm, but I always start my music then open Strava app so it starts grabbing the GPS signal but I don't start it - I just power off the screen to slip into my pocket during warm up.

Dunno if it'll help, but worth a shot.

Looking forward to seeing the new shoes! I need to get my GA done too.

😊

Good thought, yeah will try that. Thanks.

It's much easier to start when you're ready to go too! 😊

I hear ya as you know re Strava! Your helpful info on it means I’ve accepted its failings and keeping my own record of PB’s which Garmin has collected correctly.

More importantly NEW SHOES 👟! My runs definetly improved after mine. Which one did you get?

I’m so pleased you’re loving this running malarkey- so am I a little bit. 😍

Full story with pic on shoes to follow of course 😀 ...but went for Nike Air Zoom Romero 13 (not sure why running shoes have to have quite so many names, but hey...).

Frustrating!! Strava has done the same to me a couple of times, I’ve run 5.2 k in a shorter time than my stated PR for 5k?!🤔 New shoes sound good though. Good luck with the running with super fit sister!

I find that Strava gives me some strange readings if I leave my wifi on. Seems more reliable if I switch wifi off. No idea why.
