desert island disc theme now stuck in head

I love the idyllic sounding little musical intro to DID - with its sounds of waves and seagulls. But then you realise the premise is about being *stranded alone* with only a few bits of music and a book and a "luxury item" and you think maybe it's not as calm and lovely as it sounds.

Awkward segue into how that tenuously describes my run this morning. I felt too lazy to go, but I checked the weather forecast and it was a nice temperature and overcast, all my sportswear was clean so I had the pick of my merino t's and my most firmly supportive sports bra. I was SO colour-coordinated today, looking good, feeling good (as Jo Whiley would often say on C25K), and I thought I was heading out for a comfortable 5K. I picked Bill Gates' DID, thinking I might learn something about the man who has had so much influence over our lives these days! Went out into a breezy street, cool enough for me to think I'd be the right temperature when running, and across towards the quiet roads where I usually run.

Two minutes in and my legs were reminding me that on Friday I ran 5.5. 5 minutes and the blessed sun had come out. 8 minutes in and the traffic was busier on my route than I expected. On the other hand, Gates' musical choices were good and he is certainly interesting! Thought I'd gotten over the toxic 10 but then about 12 minutes in it still felt a bit tough - was keeping note of my pace every km and it wasn't too fast, but still, I tried to make sure I was steady. Converted my thin leggings into knee-lengths (ie. hoiked them up to my knees) and got a bit of breeze through the old leg hair, checked where I was and happily turned to run - uphill though - along the side of the Big Park and slowly looping towards home. Slightly upped the pace on the last Km, which lasted longer than I thought, whoops! Ended the route in the Small Park, which has had its pathways refreshed and designated as shared cycling space - but it was mainly used by people strolling, running, or showing off their small dogs this morning.

Not easy, but not terrible - and yet again another run brought to you by the mantra of "the only runs you regret are the runs you don't do". 5K from the week 1 of ju-ju-'s plan done, and very happy I am about that!

I love that mantra. 😁 Glad you got out for a good ole run, icklegui! I am very much enjoying this 10k plan, I really hope I can finish it! And lady, get thee some shorts. So much nicer to have all bits of leg exposed to the elements! I really don’t give a hoot anymore about what people think of me and my very white pins. 😂 xxx

yeah! It wasn't as bleak as being stranded on an island but I definitely wasn't running in an idyllic paradise!

I would really like to hit 10K this time too!

Oh - and I'm one step ahead of you on the clothing suggestion! I indulged yesterday and bought shorts and capris...

We. Will. Do. This! And I don’t care how long it takes me. (I am resigned to getting an injury at some point, I have form for this lol!)

Yay you got shorts! Honestly, I hope you enjoy them. I hate wearing running tights now. First outing I felt very self conscious but now I couldn’t give three hoots. 🦉🦉🦉

I honestly don’t understand why either of you doubt it for one second! Of COURSE you will do it! X

Well, I didn't continue progressing on the programme last time I tried. I'd like to this time - but also no pressure! The long-term - rest of life? - goal is just to keep running :)

Three hoots! one more than people are normally asked to give. Inflation? :D

I'm sure I'll get hooted at when I wear my shorts, but I doubt it'll be hoots of appreciation! Also I wonder, given the British climate, whether I'll need the shorts very much ...! 🏃‍♀️🦉🦉🌦️

Well done for the run, and great to see you posting again.

I find Bill Gates curiously attractive - I found out he’s Scorpio, and they do tend to be charismatic. He and Steve Jobs are both interesting. Bill Gates is much deeper and more humanitarian than you might expect. Ive heard him speak in interview. Gives a lot of money to charity - I know he can afford it, but not everyone with money is that altruistic.

Anyway, back to your run, fantastic x

Aw thank you! I am on this site constantly, posting or not :)

Gates is certainly interesting and I'm sure most people like him if they meet him. Attractive, I'll leave to personal taste! I'd love to chat to him about his work. Humanitarian - I think he's paid my wages for a few months, that's very charitable of him! Seriously though I ought to learn a bit more about his foundation...

I never would have listened to Desert Island Discs really if it hadn't been for these forums recommending it for runs! I stick to the comedy from Radio 4 usually. I laughed recently when someone mentioned they had run to The Archers and couldn't believe who they had become! I haven't got that far into R4-land yet :)

Well, I don’t fancy bill gates, and I use the term curiously attractive because he is charismatic in a strange way. As for running, I don’t use anything: I find running without the distraction of earphones means the run often becomes meditative - but it’s a matter of personal taste 😊

ah yes, I'd slightly overinterpreted "attractive"! (Speaking of which, Poldark tonight!)

I run unplugged sometimes; for me it's a matter of mood (and also if I'm exploring new routes, where I ought to keep my wits, such as they are, about me). Sometimes I need complete physical and mental distraction, other times I feel totally fine running with my thoughts. It's the same at work.

Poldaaaarrrrrk! I shall watch tomorrow on iplayer, when I don’t have t(e distraction of man, dog and squeaky Kong toy 😬
