Gutted- knee pain

Just come back from first attempted run with new Garmin. Had to stop at 1 mile due to inner knee pain at the bottom of the knee. Had it once before at the end of a run both on downhill sections. Also sometimes locks when sitting in certain positions. I’m just starting to increase my distance and fear this is going to be a teal set back. What do I do? 😭

Gait analysis?

Done last week. New shoes as well as new Garmin 🙄 Last time knee pain happened was with old shoes so don’t think it’s that.

Oh poop. Maybe you should go to a physio?

If it's a persistent pain then I would think it's worth getting it checked out by a doctor or physio... My knees sometimes lock when I'm sitting too, usually due to the cat sitting on them and bending them the wrong way a bit. In my case it's due to minor hypermobility, do you know the cause of the locking you experience? Might you be a bit over-bendy too? I also overpronate a good deal because of my stupid hypermobile ankles—and could do some cracking party tricks when I was a teenager (sure, I'll climb through that tennis racket). I already knew about it but they did pick it up during gait analysis and advise accordingly, so that's worth a go if you think the doctor isn't necessary.

If either of my knees hurt now I stick a support on them, I have a bioskin one that I really like. It does slip down sometimes though so I need to tape it on round the top. A bit of extra compression and warmth seems to really help, so even a doubled up tubigrip might give you a bit more support until your muscles strengthen. Neither of my knees have been niggly for ages so I think running is a good thing for them long term :)

Thank you. My knee is absolutely fine to walk on and when it happened before I ran well for weeks after. I wondered about a support but not sure if it would help. I had gait analysis last week and have a neutral gait. It just seems that something within my knee almost pops out of place temporarily 😕

I get this in my left knee (injured in a road traffic accident decades ago) and always run with a support on it. Try a good elasticated one and see if it helps. If I forget and run without, it always nags.

See a physio. I had a similar issue recently and he identified the problem as being a weak glute not a knee injury, and said a knee support was not a good idea because your muscles can get used to it and get lazy. He said it was good I went to him early before the problem became more chronic. Don’t take any chances if you want to keep running - see a sports physio!
