Strava - Privacy

Now I may be preaching to the converted here, but this post was prompted following a bit of a 'chat' on Strava last night.

I know that some of you use Strava to keep a record of your running, in fact I follow some of you, but I was just wandering whether everyone was aware of the need to set your privacy properly.

There is a in settings there is a "privacy" option whereby you can hide your home location - you can set an area around your home postcode which will not be made public - an essential to set as this will not give an exact location of your house. You can still see your entire run on your own Stava but to everyone else, anything up to 1km from your home can't be seen. If you think about it, if you are away from home and record a run this will potentially highlight to ne'er do wells that you home may be empty....

Enjoy the running, it seems to be warming up at last.

I know people who have had targeted bike thefts I am sure through this kind of thing. Thanks for the reminder

That's one of the main reasons both myself and my husband have the maximum distance set.

Thank you...someone pointed this out to me the other night..I’d never thought of it before...makes sense x

I never run from the house or end a run there, and dont run at the same time/place consistently, and there is nearly always someone at home when I run - but for people to whom that doesnt apply, this is common sense.

I have just looked in privacy settings on Strava and can’t find it. Is it only on the premium one or have I missed something. Just to be sure I’ve made everything private 😄

Oh I am a cheapskate so am not on premium - go into settings, then select privacy from the left hand menu and it is then partway down the page.

Thanks but I still can’t find it 🤔. If I go to Privacy I get this list: Enhanced privacy, Privacy by default, Group activity enhanced privacy, Hide from leaderboards, Hide from flybys. So I’m confused 🙃(which is not unusual for me with tech things).

Have you got enhanced privacy ticked as I have a feeling this is where is will appear - let me know how you get on!

I have clicked enhanced privacy and it locks all the ones I mentioned so everything is private but I can’t adjust anything, it’s just private or not private. I have an iPhone do you think it might be different on other phones? Or am I still missing something 😄

You may have to use the website rather than the app.

Thanks SC1472. I think you’re right 👍

Yes, you need to be on the website to set a privacy zone around your address or addressses.

I'm paranoid about security (I don't even open my gardens in the village for fear of being staked out) and I'm sometimes a bit gobsmacked about how some people show so much information online. I'm not on Strava or Garmin Connect or anything else that shows my runs and I really don't want anyone (including my friends) to know where I run.......ahem......especially my friends 😉😂

Very good advice. I never ever enter my proper details on websites e.g. date of birth etc. I have Facebook security as tight as I can make it and am amazed how many people have all their info available for anyone to see.

Isn't Theziggy your real name?🤩

Setting enhanced privacy also lets you approve who follows you .. I had someone trying to follow me and when I checked they were just name grabbing! They had about 20 people already with the same surname as mine!

Do people also realise that unless you select private on your Health unlocked posts that these can be read without logging into the website!
