I do not have a good history with ice, it has a habit it of getting the better of me. I knew today it would not be an outdoor run as there is ice all over mingled with a bit of snow, but I thought go to the gym a bit of treadmill running and a swim thatโll do the trick.
So off I set on the bus forgetting that there is all the park to contend with before I actually hit the gym with two lots of steps. Found a path on the first level in the snow then a nice little ice free path down the first set of steps, then started to walk on what I thought was defrosted ice, NO it wasn't . It was lovely black ice. That was it feet out from under me straight down on my backside, put my arms out to stop me hitting my head and bumped to the floor. There was a teacher near by with about 10 kids, they shouted out to as if I was ok, I put my thumbs up, then they burst out laughing. Hehe I give them their due they found out first that I was ok before they laughed. ๐๐๐๐.
So I turned round and came back home. I am hoping I havenโt done any damage as such and it is just a sore gluteus muscle and a dented pride.
Take it easy out there eveyone.

We had similar conditions yesterday so that even a walk was a โshall-I-sharnet-Iโ eisode all morning. Finally got out after 2pm when things had thawed, but only walked. But when we were out driving we passed a runner who was realllllly striding out at pace.....how is that possible on ice?
Wish we had sunny spring here with us, still hopefully not long to wait now ๐ค๐ผ
I know, I saw runners at a really fast pace today, I have no idea how they do that. I know I am a total wimp with ice and my Dad says my nerves will make me more prone to falling. I really want spring to come now, I have loads of training to do. ๐. Glad you got out for a walk.
I feel for you RFC. I bit it big time on some black ice in January and am now super cautious about any ice I see. I hate that it put this fear in me โน๏ธ. I hope you are ok. Come on summer.........
Ice should be outlawed unless used when drinking with single malts of for skating purposes where people who can skate can skate on it in a closed and secured (presumably cold) environment for skaters only.
I ran yesterday, and not only was I bashed by the wind, I had to avoid black ice (death ice?) and slush. I spent the whole duration of my run focusing on the ground while getting overlapped by care-free sprinters who either:
a) don't care
b) have special ice pounding technique
c. have never fallen and twisted their knees by 180 degrees and then cursed ice for the rest of their days
Feeling a lot better now thanks, like my FIL reminded me I have a bit of padding to fall on to. ๐. I really donโt know how people run at full pelt on it. Maybe they have an inner skater them. They definitely havenโt rolled their car twice on Black ice and felt the full force of nature from it. ๐ณ. It is beautiful out there now and nearly all gone, maybe I should of waited a bit.
So far so good, I think I have just got away with a few bruises. It really is rotten stuff. I broke a finger two days before Christmas from falling on the ice. My Mum had to cut my Christmas Dinner up for me ๐. Normally I donโt bother at all, lesson learnt, going back to being over cautious again.
Oh that could have been much worse. Glad you are ok apart from the ego part. Black ice is very scary. Any hint of it and I avoid it or walk very carefully.
Hope youโre not feeling too battered this morning. Ice is a real pain for walkers and runners. I claim itโs easier to run on ice than it is to walk though. If you take small steps, lean forward and try to keep your centre of gravity underneath you then it can be manoevred. But easier said than done!
And I also have slid gracefully to my bottom this year - while walking. But it really was a graceful slide and I didnโt even count it as a fall. In fact by the time I got home Iโd forgotten about it! The worst Iโve ever seen was a layer of black ice, like glass, covering the pavements one day on the way to work. And there was one stretch where the pavement sloped slightly. Me in my work shoes just sliding inexorably towards the road (very quiet road - no real danger). I just couldnโt stop myself. Managed to get back on the pavement and remember clinging to the garden fences, walking sideways trying to get to the station. All fun and games!
I think that is half my problem with ice, I donโt walk properly when I get scared, as soon as my feet slide thatโs it my brain takes over and I just freeze and walk funny, hehe I went ice skating once and did the same thing. Luckliy Feeling fine today, no lasting effects.
Glad you're ok! Ooohh ice, I know all about it (Finland). We've had thaws and minus 10 at night so even the gritted paths are rutted with frozen solid slush footprints, areas of thick black ice with recent powder snow on top, great! Weather above feezing from next week (spring at last?), can only hope so.
Nope! Only run outside when it's suitable (compacted snow and warmer than about minus 5!) I wimp out and run down in a parking hall under where I live!
Oh dear, hope it was mainly your pride that was bruised and you are now recovered. I go over at the first hint of ice. Didn't go along to my HM last Sunday which part of me feels wimpish about but have never run on snow and didn't feel was the time to start.
I donโt blame you for that one, it must of been a disappointment though, sorry you missed out. I am fine didnโt even bruise I must have really good bounce capabilities. ๐.
