Calf pain

Did a 5k run on Sunday but struggled as my right calf was hurting so walked the last bit. Haven’t run since as it’s been too painful but it has felt better the past 2 days. Went out for a run again tonight but the pain is back in my right calf. Any advice would be great. It feels like I have had cramp but I haven’t.

Tricky issues these.... have you tried foam rolling? This may help. Also getting gait analysis.... if nothing helps get it checked out....

I have been using the foam roller and I had gait analysis in December. It has been fine up until now. I’m hoping it’s just a slight pulled muscle and if I give it time along with using the roller and stretching it may heal up. Just gutted as I was just getting into my stride with my running. Thanks ju-ju- 👍🏼

On the basis that it sounds like it could be a calf muscle tear (hopefully a stage 1 tear) I would say do not run again for at least 3 week, see a sports physio and get it checked out. If your lucky you won't be on the injury couch for long.

I am aiming to give it at least a week and then I will see how it goes. I can feel it when I walk so I will know when it’s ok again. Think I was just a bit impatient this week and went out again too soon. Thanks for the advice x

Hi Sue, that sounds painful, I would take a few days off running, a week even.

Also remember you don't have to run 5k every run Sue, some shorter runs, and the stepping stones podcasts are good fun too... 30 min runs are fine. You will still be improving all the time.

If your calf isn't better after that week off I would see a sports physio or your doc. to get it checked out in case its a tear as pinkaardvark says.

Take care😊x

Yeah I think your right I have been pushing myself too much too soon. I will give it plenty of rest now and see how it is. Will definitely see a sports physio if it doesn’t improve. Will look at those podcasts too. Thanks for the advice x

I swear by my calf compression sleeves. Everything hurts except my calves and I’ve never had a problem with them since donning the sleeves. Gotta be worth a try.
