Running bib fastening tips!

Right folks, critical stuff here(!)

What's the consensus on pinning your race number to your top.

Safety pins? If so how many do you use and where do you pin for most reliable fastening?!

Or do you use something else?

T- 2 days (less than, in fact)

Storm Brian can go do one, thank you.

Ha! Good luck in the upcoming race, Sarah.

I always take 4 small safety pins to a race. Often Race HQ will provide them, but you never know! One in each corner of the race number.

A tip that I learned from experience was to get the points of the safety pins pointing inwards. I'm right handed, and so I tend to insert the safety pin with the sharp end pointing left on all 4 corners. A couple of times in a race, the safety pin on my top left has come undone, and then you have a sharp point sticking into your arm as you run. I had to pull the safety pin off and throw it into the hedge both times :-(

Thank you Mark!

Four, one in each corner and it's much easier to do this when the top is lying flat rather than trying to do it once you're wearing it!

You can buy fancy fastening thingies instead of safety pins but I haven't got these so can't recommend or not.

As MarkyD says take your own pins. Most organisers will provide them but I have turned up to a race where they didn't 😯

Good luck Sarah. You'll be fab 🏃🏃🏃

I have a race on Sunday and have race tee, bib etc 🙂 i use four safety pins, one at each corner of the number. place the bib number lower down, across your midriff, below your bust 😃

Have fun! 🏃‍♀️👍🏅

I live 5 minutes from where the GSR starts and the wind is already at a level tonight where I wouldn't want to go down there. Am running the GSR too on Sunday and very much hoping Brian has whizzed off faster than the current forecast suggests. I am very familiar with running the stretch that forms the last 2 miles of the event into a headwind and it isn't pleasant at F5 and above.

Good luck for Sunday.

You too! I'm hoping as well, but If I have to walk, I have to walk...

What is F5 in wind speed terms? I'm not familiar with that terminology. Current forecast is 20mph.

I bought these 4 years ago and wouldn't be without them. Easy, no pins and no holes in your tops!

Good luck in your race!!

I was looking at these last night! Unfortunately my race is tomorrow so no time to buy them, thank you though! X

I always have safety pins pinned into the inside of my race bag. Usually they are provided, but just in case!

As others have said, one in each corner and have your number below your bust.

I have looked at the bib clips as you can get all sorts, but i fear i would end up losing them anyway.

Enjoy your race.

Thanks! Yeah I am definitely bringing my own! What size of pin do you use? I'm thinking the bigger the more secure?

Millsie-J profile image

No you just need the small ones. You dont want any rubbing anywhere so I wouldnt go for the big ones. Take some on your bag if you are picking up your number there, but pick some up there anyway, then you keep a stash for next time. Just take your time securing them properly, and as others have said point them in to the centre.

Four safety pins for me, Sarah - one in each corner and I always. Take my own. Never had any problems. Really good luck with tomorrow's run - wish I was up to doing it this year, although I shall keep my fingers crossed that the winds drop a little for you! 💨🏃🏽‍♀️💨😉 Look forward to your race report. 🙂x

So much better now thanks, Sarah. Back up to 10k on my long runs and very happy about it! 🙂 Planning to do a local 10k at the end of November, along with my OH and also hoping to enter the Surrey Half Marathon next year (if I can stay fit!). Happy running!🙂🏃🏽‍♀️
