She creeps tentatively back into the bridge to 10k forum....

...To say that I actually ran 7k this morning!😊 I have been running regular 5k's for a while but felt hammered at the end of them and didn't think I had the stamina to go any further. Anyway I've worked out why I felt a) hammered at the end of a 5k and b) why I previously couldn't go further than 5 k. WelI I was just running too damn fast! (When I say fast I don't mean fast ,fast I mean fast for me).

Anyway slowed my pace right down (why I didn't just listen to all the advice you read about on here earlier) and slowed right down so my breathing was comfortable and I gently plodded. My shins screamed at me for the first 4 k reminding me that I ran a too fast 5k on Thursday but eventually they loosened up so I could plod on and I got to 7k! Think I could have gone further but will just take it a bit at a time towards the goal of 10k.😊

Thank you poppy pug. I must say I really enjoyed my plodding pace today. No headphones today, just looking and listening at nature and being in my own world. ☺️

That will teach you to pay attention to advice... slow and slower... it works!!!

Go you... well done indeed!

7K was my magic number... it feels good doesn't it... onwards and upwards for you... :)

Yes doesn't it, slow is good cos it helped me to get further at an enjoyable pace. My new mantra is Slow, sister, slow! I muttered this to myself all the way round today 😄

That is excellent! I have a running speed I travel at but know for a long run, I should run more slowly. Hard though, isn't it? Not that I ever run fast but it is all relative. I also have a hatred of walk breaks or stopping but now I am running further, I have had to chill out! Firstly, running in the countryside involves uneven ground, gates, dogs that need stroking, wondering which way I should go next and just admiring a beautiful view! So I am allowing a breather if I want one or need it. I have a 10k event in 3 weeks, but then Half Marathon in September, so doing 2 X 5k and a long run per week. Inched up from 5 to 5.5, then 6, 7, 8 and then did a 10km. I just ran a bit further when I was feeling ok and chose places I enjoy running (in my case the fields, woods and tracks) so it feels like an adventure rather than trudging the local streets! I find grass and mud is more kind to my legs too avoiding knee problems and the shin splints I nearly succumbed to as a result of pounding the pavements!

Ooh hope your 10k goes well in a few weeks. Glad your legs are behaving themselves. I think my shin ache is due to 'sprinting' the last bit of my 5k on Thursday. I could feel my stride lengthening which I always pay for the next day. Going to stop this silliness and keep up the slow!

Well done. Slow and steady, as you say, but I think that 7K is the turning point when building up because if you can run for 7K you can run for 10. But inching towards it sounds like a plan!

Ooh do you think so? 7 isn't that far away from 10 is it? I feel now I have done 7k then 10k is within reach but I am just going to increase slowly and steadily😊

Really glad you are feeling that progress with a new pace that is obviously allowing you to increase stamina. I also increased by initially running 3 x 5ks and then increasing one run gradually, until I made it to the magic 10k! Good luck🙂

Thank you, I am looking forward to reaching that magic number. I just need to recognise it's got to be slow to reach the distance and I xpect time comes later? It took me 50 mins to do 7k which seems like snail speed but at least I did it I suppose☺️

Pace definately increases as you get used to the distance. Stamina first, strength and speed later!
