Operation day

Hello have written a few times about my brave and strong sister who is 46 and has genetic breast Cancer. She finished her chemo fec-t regime last month and is currently in theatre having a bilateral mastectomy, it was really hard getting her to go in this morning she was so frightened. Just hope her recovery isn’t too bad for her before radiotherapy starts. Any advice and tips on recovery greatly appreciated. Thanks Louise x

Everyone is different in the capacity to recover and from the op they are having. It is a very anxiety provoking experience but most folks come through thinking it wasn't as bad as they thought it would be. The drains can be a nuisance but you just have to be patient with them. It is important to get that movement going when directed. Someone on here I think passed a tip from their surgeon about reaching up to try to touch the top of a door as you go through it. Along with the exercises, that was a good way of measuring your progress.

I wish your sister and you family well. Healing took longer than I anticipated but I am not a patient patient! 😀

Hi I had a right mastectomy in January with 5 nodes removed. 2 positive 3 negativity

Tell your sister to try and stay calming trust her surgeon ther will be about 20 people just looking after her❤️

I had no pain afterwards and was home the next morning.

I only have a little pain now adhesions

And not to worry about seroma fluid I had a huge seroma thought I was growing a new boob lol

But they do go away by themselves

Good luck will be sending good vibes your way

Many thanks ladies for all your lovely messages. It seems my sister will be out of hospital today, does worry me as only her and her son at home, but he is 18 so should be more than capable of keeping a check on her until I can be there at the weekend.

I think the important thing is for your sister to do is to follow the instructions she is given on how much she can and can't do after surgery. You don't say whether your sister is having reconstruction at the same time. I'm guessing possibly not if she is having a bilateral mastectomy. I had both my breasts removed and all the lymph nodes in my left axilla in June 2016. I left hospital the following day. I have not had reconstruction. A couple of months after my surgery I was back looking after my horse. The drains are a nuisance but again, if your sister follows the instructions, they are manageable. I didn't drive until my drains were out, mostly because I was afraid of catching them on something. As soon as they were gone, about 7 days, I was back behind the wheel albeit just locally. I didn't have a lot of pain. What I did have was easily managed by taking Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, and it was more as the operation sites started to heal. I live alone, don't have any family and had never had any surgery before and in fact had only had one night in hospital in 56 years - and that was due to sepsis after chemo so I was more than a little anxious. I am sure your sister will be absolutely fine and she has you and her son to help her which is lovely. Best wishes to you all.

Hope your sister is starting to feel better. Everyone has there own route....some people heal faster than others. The exercises are very important & help you to get ready for the position you have to be in for rads. If the exercises are not going well dont be scared to say. I had some extra physio to help me as my rads started 6 weeks after my op.
