best calcium citrate
Can't comment on specific brands. Personally I've found capsules more tolerable than solid tablets or caplets, no matter what the supplement. You may also be interested to know that yoghurt is supposed to help with absorbing a calcium supplement. Don't take calcium with some other things (you'll know about medications, but don't take a magnesium supplement at the same time as calcium will prevent it from being properly absorbed), Vitamin D enables the body to absorb calcium, and Vitamin K2 (and magnesium) make sure that calcium gets into the bones. I've also read that citrus helps with calcium absorption, but maybe that's to help with other forms of calcium than calcium citrate?
Hi radars, I’m sure I’ve probably mentioned these before but I was incredibly sensitive to the calcium I was prescribed my my doctors. On a good day I probably get enough calcium from my diet but to be sure I top up with one of these a day.
They are very gentle on the gut - I have IBS and they don’t cause me any problems at all. togetherhealth.co.uk/produc...
They come in capsule form, I’m like HeronNS I take all of my vitamins in capsule form as I also find them more tolerable. I buy my own D3 and it comes in capsule form too.
thanks, but I can't take a chance with all the other stuff in it.
Oh I’m sorry about that. I hope you find something soon. What about the fortified orange juice with added calcium you get in the supermarket. Do you think you might be able to take that?
I have got a hiatus hernia so can't drink orange juice.
What about almond milk? That's very good for calcium, and easy to digest- unless you have a nut allergy... you'd need to drink quite a lot - not just a splash in tea!
I drink alpro unsweetened soya milk just the same, I drink it with whey protein powder.
That's good, but if you can tolerate almond milk instead... "Almond milk has fewer calories than soy milk, 17 per 100 grams. It has 188 milligrams of calcium to soy's 25 milligrams. Almond milk is also a good source of riboflavin, a B vitamin, at 0.177 milligrams to soy milk's 0.069 milligrams." I've recently made the switch myself!
I cannot buy this in the United States.
Oh that is a pity. I think AlgaeCal is an American product but it is expensive here in the U.K.
I’m not sure what it costs in the US though or what else is in it.
Does this seaweed product contain both calcium and magnesium together?
I don’t know if that link will open in the US but according to the advert for it it says.
HARVESTED
Calcified seaweed is sustainably harvested from the coastal waters of the Atlantic.
DRYING & CLEANING
The seaweed is naturally dried in the sun then steamed to clean and purify it without the need for chemicals.
MILLED & SIEVING
The seaweed is then ground and sifted into a fine powder ready for encapsulation.
PURIFICATION
The powder is passed through magnets to remove any heavy metals from the seaweed's natural environment.
TESTING & ENCAPSULATION
The purified powder undergoes heavy metal and microbial testing. Approved powder is then encapsulated.
The trace minerals it includes that are really just that - a trace, although there is a bit more magnesium. I take my own magnesium, boron and K2-Mk7 amongst other things.
As long as you can swallow them and the supplements are actually calcium citrate, it shouldn't make different what brand you use. Alas, Solray fails on the second point. It is actually a blend of Calcium Citrate, Calcium Carbonate, and some herbs that they claim help absorption.
My favorite Calcium Citrate is a Puritan's Pride house brand. 250mg per capsule. I prefer capsules over tablets and caplets because capsules are much easier to swallow. Unfortunately, Puritan's Pride been out of stock for literally a year.
Swanson has a 200 mg calcium citrate capsule. They also sell a 200 mg calcium asporotate. Calcium is claimed to be better absorbed than calcium citrate
If you use Bone Up by Jarrow, you can get D3, calcium, K and everything else you need in the same pill. They prescribe 2 pills 3 times a day but most people seem to take less than that (either don't need that much or to save money). I only take 1 pill at breakfast and 1 at dinner as a rule, and my doctor said my calcium levels are fine.
I take 2 Lamberts "Calasorb" tablets, to top up my calcium intake. They're currently cheapest from Medino (see link) but you can buy them elsewhere, including directly from Lamberts' own website. They're UK based. The tablets also have a small amount of vitamin D3 (just 2 micrograms per tablet). As it's such a small amount, I still also take my usual vitamin D3 supplement, which is 25 micrograms (or 1,000 iu)
