Looking for advice.Have the algae calcium increased your calcium level? What dose/brand do you take?If you also have thyroid problems has the iodine content affected your thyroid levels?

I was diagnosed osteoporosis 3yrs ago trying to avoid medications as reacted to biphosphates.

Prescribed Theical d3 and not good on my stomach after my calcuim levels dropped after starting HRT (hoping that means it's gone to my bones) and the D3 is causing insomnia I can only tolerate small amounts of D3 .

Vitamin d level 64 so within normal limits.

Just tried half a tablet today within an hr want to vomit my heads Banging!

Not taking any more.

Many thanks

I’ve been taking Together Health Marine based calcium for quite a while now togetherhealth.co.uk/produc... but I get most of my calcium from my diet - I just take one capsule daily - that is half of the recommended dose.

Like you I found I really didn’t get on well at all with calcium carbonate as prescribed by my GP (I see Theical is calcium carbonate) and when I spoke to my osteoporosis nurse I found out that a lot of people didn’t get on well with calcium carbonate.

I found this YouTube of Margaret Martin’s interesting, it talks about calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. youtube.com/watch?v=ehxKfZU...

I haven’t a clue if what I am taking is doing any good or not. I do know that it doesn’t upset my gut and also that too much non dietary calcium is not good for you and that you are best to get calcium from calcium rich foods. The ROS has a list of calcium rich foods which I have found really helpful theros.org.uk/information-a...

As far as I was aware calcium blood tests test the amount of calcium in your blood - not in your bones but I may be wrong on that one. The way things are I haven’t a clue if or when I will ever be called back for a repeat DEXA scan.

My D3 is 171 on a range of 50- 200 so it is nearer to the top of the range. I always take mine in the morning so it might be worth trying that if you feel it is interfering with your sleep. I take my magnesium at night.

Thank you for your reply. Saw the together brand of calcium but worried about the iodine effecting thyroid levels. I know you have been on the same thyroid journey so was interested to know if it had any effect on your levels?

I did the ROS calcium calculator and I seem to be Getting enough from my diet and but my levels dropped recently.

I usually use better for you D3 k2 spray so will go back to that.

Sorry, I missed that part of your question, I don’t think it has had much of any effect on my thyroid. Recent test results are all similar to what they’ve always been and you do need some iodine in your diet.

I like to top up my calcium with foods off the list - like an orange or a handful of nuts. When I saw the it’s first I’m afraid I overindulged in quiche and pizza - two of my absolute favourites and a great excuse to eat them but alas I piled on the lbs. so I’m more sensible now.

I’ve just looked at iodine rich foods and realise that I probably eat a lot of iodine containing foods 🤔 eggs - I have a two egg omelette most days , fish, chicken, kale broccoli, garlic on the plus side I rarely salt food, in fact even as a child I hated salty food.

Interesting to know has not affected your thyroid results.I will order some algea supplements and give them a go and hope they do the trick. Same here I have a dollop of Greek yogurt on fruit. Snack on mixed nuts and raisins been adding pulses to curries soups and stews. Eat hummus cheese and milk. Love sprouts! Lol

Take care and thanks
