Prolia & Hiatus Hernia

Hi All, I am on Prolia, for the last 4yrs, with some improvement. My lumbar spine seems to be hard to get improvement there. My dexa scan was down last year. It had improved previous year. I'm on PPI & trying to get off them, only on 20mgs in am, I have a Hiatus hernia. I would be grateful if anybody else has been on PPI & got off them. My next dexa scan is in Nov & hopefully it will have improved. Many thanks.

M

Hi Joints,

I was dx with Hiatus Hernia in 2007 at age 48 - I hadn't been sleeping well, and my daughter heard me choking in my sleep (hence investigations). I was put on 30mg Lansoprazole - later increased to 60mg.

Late last year I was dx coeliac - so I immediately cut the dose back down to 30mg, realising that I too needed to get off the PPI's. I intended to do this slowly, but I saw a gastroenterologist in March and he wanted me to stop them immediately due to endoscope EEk! Thankfully all good.

I don't really know if stopping them dead had much of an impact because my gut was going through all sorts of stuff at the time, not just the coeliac.

I'm now 2 months free of PPI's, and finding that as long as I don't eat a huge meal, or anything too spicy that I'm generally OK. I do occasionally take Gaviscon. I wouldn't recommend you stop them dead like I had to, but I do think that Dr's keep us on them for too long.

I have read that as we get older that stomach acid levels decline. Being gluten free may be a factor in why I seem to be OK without the PPI's.

My DEXA came back Osteopenia fortunately, but I keep an eye on here for future reference.

I wish you all the best for your next scan.

Hi,Yes I was on Lansoprazole.

I had several bad attempts at trying to come off them on my own (My symtoms became much worse)

I have a Hiatus Hernia and motility dysfunction of the gullet.

I was having gastric issues and paid private to see a specialist who decided he was going to wean me of the lansoprazole.

I did this with great success and have never looked back.

When I was coming off them my symtoms were worse before they got better but I persevered and soon came to realize I did not need them in the first place.

Start by taking them every other day, then after 4 weeks 2 days between each dose, after another 4 weeks stop taking them.

I managed my symtoms with Gaviscon Advance, and now I only need to take that on the odd occasion.

Hope this helps you and like me you can get off them completely.
