I'm afraid I have read of this happening, probably on this or the American Bone Health forum. Did you take any medications before starting Prolia? It appears that people who took bisphosphonates before they started denosumab have some protection against the rebound effect.

I was on denosumab for a while before starting Prolia but it didn't seem to be making much difference. The Prolia at least slowed down (but did not stop) the rate of bone loss. But at least denosumab didn't destroy my life the way Prolia did!

I'm confused dunosamab can have 2 different medications in it One is Prolia but I can't remember the.other. You should ask your doctor which medication you had

Prolia IS denosumab. The other brand name is Xgeva. Denosumab is the generic name, Prolia and Xgeva are brand names. They are used differently.

Yes! I have! My Prolia shot was late due to a change of doctors at the medical center. JUST FOUR WEEKS after the shot was due I sustained just FOUR WEEKS LATE I sustained THREE PAINFUL VERTEBRAL COMPRESSION FRACTURES! This was almost 2 years ago. Since then the bones have healed but the damage has left me unable to sit or stand without pain for more than an hour or two -- and has made a "normal" life impossible.

ALSO I now have a painful tooth with a broken root that needs to be extracted but the doctors do not want to do this while I'm on Prolia for fear of fracturing my jaw! If I stop Prolia I could have more fractures. If the tooth is extracted while I"m ON Prolia I could have a broken jaw. BEST CASE SCENARIO I could live with a TOOTHACHE until next spring just before my Prolia shot is due and they'll do some blood tests to see if the tooth can be addressed!

If I could undo that stupid stupid stupid decision to allow Prolia into my life six years ago I'd do almost anything to get off this evil drug. I'm trying to find some safe way to do so.

I am now booked for end January for my 3rd injection. It is now 3 months overdue due to lost blood tests and unusable ones. I have to have another blood test tomorrow before my next injection. Sorry to hear of your problems and hope it does not happen to me.

Hello Panda22

I understand people have had rebound fractures due to lateness, but Prolia doesn't stop being in your system dead on the 6 months marker, so .....

When you say you have missed the date by how long? More than 3-4 weeks?

Can I suggest you get support in either getting the blood tests and the 3rd Prolia injection or a plan to take an alterative medication to make sure you are as safe as possible from rebound fractures.

Forgive me if I sound bossy, but I was in the group of people who was advised to stopped Prolia, in my case after the 5 years and excellent results. At that time rebound fractures not really taken seriously in the UK, 3 months after stopping I had spinal fractures. Please don't panic it only happens to a few people, but please do get something sorted out for yourself as soon as you can.

Good Luck.

Thank you. I am now 9 weeks late for my injection. They lost my blood samples. I had them done again on Christmas Eve but still not had results. I have an appointment with my doctor to find out what's going on. Hopefully they will get it sorted out.

Oh, what a worry poor you, I hope the GP gets things moving for you.

Okay you are at risk, but I understand there will still some Prolia in your system, you'd have to be so really unlucky for a rebound fracture to happen.

Best Wishes

Although the risk is real, it isn't common. Here is a description of a study:

i think they are now describing rebound using terms like 'frequent' ...not rare.i read a paper yesterday that used the word! i am petrified of stopping, because i have only used prolia,no prior bisphosphonates. its worse for me,because i have had no side effects in 7 years,so i reckon even though i will be taking fosamax in june,my luck is going to run out and i will be f###ed!!!!

Could you find the article you mention and post the link? Good to keep up to date with this. Thanks.

On the other hand we don't want to terrify people, the strangers we befriend through the forum, as we don't know what their state of mind is.

hey, while you mean well, prolia is terrifying and people need to know.their state of mind wont make any difference to multiple vertebral fractures.

Yes, you're right. And truth be told I'm very glad I no longer seem to be the only person on these various bone forums warning people not to take medications. I think the days of patting elderly (usually) women on the head and telling them to take their medicine and all will be well are over.

It's just that I don't know what the other person has going on in their lives at the moment. They need to know, but how do we tell them? Accompany the warning with some alternatives so they don't despair?

Of course it's too late for people who have already suffered consequences of the meds, they know all too well. But someone who might be in danger needs to have some kind of hope to grab onto - like the article you found which states that the risks do appear to diminish with strong bisphosphonate treatment if Prolia is stopped. It's not ideal but maybe in most cases the worst can be avoided.

Thanks for posting.

Can I ask why you’re stopping Prolia(Denosumab)?

I have a friend who fractured DUE to getting the injections .

they say the drug makes bone very very fragile and breakable
