I heard about it yesterday and looked it up. You can only take it relatively short-term, then have to follow on with Prolia, otherwise you'll lose all the gains made! And apparently there's a high risk of cardiovascular issues! The plus (if there is one) is that it helps build new bone, rather than preventing old bone from breaking down.

Oh brother. So this is an introduction to denosumab? And then when you discontinue that you need another medication to prevent rebound osteoporosis. 😣

Why are drug companies allowed to mess around with people's bodies like this?

Some years ago my mother-in-law broke her arm. She was recovering well, was given a shot of something which was supposed to help her bone heal better, and within a few weeks had a massive stroke and a month after that died (pneumonia, treated only palliatively because the stroke had disabled her so badly). Much later I've learned about the risks of these bone meds and wonder, would she have avoided the stroke if she hadn't had that extra medication? Did it trigger the stroke? She had never had any cardio-vascular problems before, was very healthy and mentally sharp.

Hi Heron,

Thanks for posting this interesting article. I just read it and read all the comments posted with the article. It was a nice long discussion back and forth about side effects vs benefit. It seems to be another topic where people are on one side or another. I personally would not take this drug until it had been on the market for a few years because of the risk of stroke and cardiac event.

I’m holding out with supplements, diet and weight bearing exercise. I do think though that some people are past that with severe osteoporosis and multiple fractures, this may be worth the risk for them. They need to weigh the benefit/ risk ratio.

For myself, I look at that ratio but I also throw in my opinion of Big Pharma and what their end game is.
