interesting article in Sunday Times today, well worth a read, won’t get many off meds perhaps but what we eat definitely helps. Covers most of the useful foods.

I read the article and I agree with everything said there. A few years ago I was on blood pressure medications and suffered bad side effects . I decided to research other ways to lower my blood pressure, diet and exercise came up all the time and I changed my diet and exercised regularly and gradually my blood pressure stabilised and I have been off medication for over 3 years now. Thank you for sharing

Thank you KBMosia. May I ask How high was your blood pressure before you modified diet and exercise and what age group? ? I think the younger you are the better the result will be, I hate medication but am 77 ( never been overweight, healthy diet and exercise reasonably ) and think sadly I have to now accept taking BP tablets at lowish dose although hated the Ramipril cough and the Amlodipine redness of feet. Side effects at just 5mg with each though not high dose. Now about to try Lacidipine. But someone said got chest pain from that for quite a while! Awful. Generally though Lacidipine supposed to have less side effects than the other ‘pines’. . So am hoping for the best. But for anyone younger I absolutely think grab the problem by the throat and do everything you can to modify bp levels naturally , that’s why I posted the article really, nothing specially new in it but brings various useful tips together nicely.

Hi, I was diagnosed in my 50's and put on 10mg amlodipine for about 5 years, for a couple of years it controlled my blood pressure well, my blood pressure started at 150/95 and with treatment it was 120-125/75-81. Then the side effects became apparent, severe anxiety, swollen ankles ++. That's when I decided to do something about it, the thought of taking anxiety medication scared the life out of me, the side effects of another medication! I am 69 next month and I feel very well. The exercise and the healthy diet has certainly been worth the effort I put in to carry it on forever. They say it is never too late to start a healthy lifestyle, age is just a number. So don't give up and say you are a certain age, please give it a go and see what happens, you have nothing to lose but a lot to gain. I wish you all the best.

Thank you, I think sound advice, I have problems with arthritis re exercise but do my best, I think what you are saying should make a real difference to lots of people, eat well, keep weight off and eat healthily then have done your best! Think very easy to pop a pill but when the side effects kick in then it’s a different matter!

There's a website called Versus Arthritis which has exercises for people with arthritic joints and a lot of advice on how to live with arthritis. Check it out, you might find something that might be useful for you.

just as an aside. When you first see your doc and she/he discovers hypertension they are supposed to give you lifestyle and diet advice and then see you a month or so later to see if it’s worked, without medication. Unless your pressure was really elevated.

a month isn’t long if people have got to change diet, lose weight, start exercising more but really agree lifestyle changes good if relevant and people able to make them.
