Lorsatan and Exercise

Hi all, I finally bit the bullet last week and started losartan 25mg as per instructions from doctor. Couple of questions

How long does it take to have any effect?

Does losartan effect exercise, I’m a keen cyclist and since taking it I feel a little off balance and chest seems to hurt more than normal.

Can losartan make you tired?

Can you drink alcohol on it? I’m not a big drinker by any means usually once a month and only a Saturday. I don’t want to give it up as I’d hate to think I could have a beer or glass of something when out for dinner?

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

Current BP as of this morning is 142/84 been on meds 5 days.

Thanks

Hi Dean - I have been on Losartan 100mg for a couple of years & workout at least 3 times a week:), but be careful not to exercise immediately after taking meds - I did this and ended up with a TIA - apparently it sets off a conflict with the meds😒 Feeling tired is normal as you are used to coping on a daily basis with an high BP - the meds force a lower BP (hopefully) and this will make you feel tired initially 😀 Alcohol is fine as with everything else as long as you don’t overdo it😆

Also, the real experts on side effects and so on are pharmacists so you can have a word there. At your age 142 is still a bit high, perhaps you need to be patient. Your doctor will have asked you to return for a checkup so write down all your queries for that time and present him or her with them.Exercise is great for hypertension but as 7brides says be cautious.

Hi Dean, I am on losartan 50mg and amlopodine 10mg. I was on rampiril before losartan and didnt like that one as it gave me a cough. I also felt tired when first started taking them. Think it takes your body a little while to get used to them. My dr said exercise was good and I lost some weight. As 7brides said dont overdo it! You havnt been on the tablets very long so might need to increase the dosage if your bp still stays a bit high. I think you will be ok with occasional glass of beer or wine. My bp has come right down since taking these tablets so wishing you good luck.

Hi Everyone.

Like Dean, I'm an avid cyclist who finally bit the bullet to start high bp meds. I avoided it for a few reasons, including fear that it would end my ability to do long (2+ hours) rides. I started 25mg Losartin 3 weeks ago. My bp dropped from 150/80 to about 132/75 during the first week, then stabilized there for the next week. (I take my bp every morning and evening to track what's happening. I use an Omron model BP742n.) Then my doc upped my dose to 50mg, which I've been on for 10 days now. My bp has dropped a little more, to about 125/70.

It's winter where I live in eastern Pennsylvania, but I've been out for about 5 short rides to try to get a feeling for how Losartan affects me while riding. I've ridden with low-to-moderate effort for up to about and hour and a half. So far, the Losartan seems to have no effect on my riding.

I'd be interested in hearing about others' experiences with intense exercise and Losartan.

Cheers.

Hi - I'm a keen cyclist and swimmer. I wa diagnosed with HBP in February 22. Average around 145/90.Started on 25mg Losartan, after 6 months I was ave 128/88.

However I was suffering from light headedness and tiredness a few days a week.

With my GP approval I've been off medication for past few weeks but BP is creeping back up.

Wondered if anyone had any tips to alleviate the light headedness in particular. Many thanks in advance.

Yes, I noticed a lot of bad side effects on Losartan; namely, horrible constipation, being tired all the time, weight gain (which I believe is from water retention, since I have not changed my diet) and itchiness. I am going back to Lisinopril immediatley since it controlled my blood pressure just as well without the side effects of Losartan 50 mg.
