Amlodipine and Losartan
I'm on Losartan potassium and it does not give me a cough. Does the literature that comes with your medicine mention cough as a side effect?
The only BP med that I know can cause a cough is Ramipril. My GP warned me when she prescribed it for me. She told me as I have a lung disease and she didn't want me to worry.
I take Amlodipine and it hasn't caused a cough. I too have lung disease, also a cystocele, so the last thing I need is a cough and I mentioned this when it was prescribed but was told it would be no problem.
Thank you for taking the time to reply,I have no other health problems other than this cough which I assumed was caused by medication but the doctor will not even consider it .I have checked online and it states Amlodipine may cause a cough.Suppose I will just have to live with it and put up with the cough.
Cough is listed as an "uncommon" side effect of Amlodipine - up to 1 in 100 people - so you must be on of the unlucky ones. However, your doctor is wrong to not consider it. I would show your doctor the patient information leaflet and ask to try an alternative. It may help to have a word with your local pharmacist first, s/he can look up alternatives and maybe suggest something else.
My doctor is always concerned about a dry cough and does not say why. I am 76 and have been on BP meds for about 6 years and have had some small unexplained bouts of eczema and dry cough. I only see my doctor about once a year and always tell them of any symptoms which they note but rarely comment on. I have read coughing can be symtomatic of heart problems and I wonder if some doctors try to spare their patients, from such information in order not to frighten them? I think it is also true to say that the medical profession does not fully understand what causes blood pressure problems? How often doctors do not tell us things that they think will upset us I do not know but I like and trust my doctor, hope I am right!!
I have had a cough for about two years now. I am 86 yrs old and have Heart failure with preserved fraction , diagnosed about 10 years ago. Like you I believe that a cough may be symptomatic of heart failure. I have told my doctor who made no comment.
I am taking: Nicorandil 20mg, Furosemide 80mg, Isosorbide Mononitrate 120mg, Nefedipine 40mg, Candesartan Cilexetil 16mg, Furosemide 40mg, Levothyroxine 25 microgram. The literature on these drugs shows a list of side effects as long as your arm, some of which is a cough. I can put up with that if it means that I am still above the grass.
I take Amlodipine , a calcium channel blocker plus Olmesartan, in the same class as Losartan -Angiotensin II receptor blockers. I do not experience any cough.
You may want to do some research of your own. The site that I use is drugs.com.
For Amlodipine I have just been on the site. You have to click "rare" side effects to have cough listed.
For Losartan side effects, cough appears under " Incidence not known."
You might want to research the two classes of drugs to see which ones do not have cough as a side effect. But above all, good for you in your decision to consult another doctor as well as a pharmacist.

This one lists Losartan as having a cough as a 'less serious side effect' !
It might be less serious but it doesn't stop it from being irritating. There are a lot of alternatives, I developed a cough on one of the drugs, so my GP changed it for me You don't need to suffer.
Hi. I’ve been on Amlodipine for many years and haven’t experienced a cough...
Hi Mailin
Yes, amlodipine did cause an annoying cough. Once I was off it, a month later, the cough stopped. I am now on Losartan potassium. I was on Candesartan but that was OK too just the hospital doctors changed it for some reason they wanted me on a diuretic as well.
these doctors will tell you amlost anything i told him i beleve the people that take them not the ones that make them and as as yourself take a print of of all the poeple that are coughing and see what he has to say to that.
Doctors often don't read up on the side effects of medicine they describe, my suggestion is to independently check and research the side effects of a certain medication. I am on Candesartan and there are eight (8) noted side effects, personally I deal with 3 listed side effects that I can manage , however I am searaching for an alternative with less side effects,...any suggestions ??
I was on losartan and Ramipril and had cough. Not now with amlopidine
