Hi, I've been taking Rampiril for past 3 years after not tolerating amlopodine. I was started o 2.5 mgs and it has been increased to 10mg fir past 2years.My question is, has anyone else developed an annoying cough, fatigue and breathlessness after exercise taking rampiril for this length of time. I am considering halving my dose to 5mg to see if there I any difference. Many thanks

My advice is to not change the dose without consulting your doctor. Secondly, reducing the dose won’t matter. Ramipril is known to cause a dry cough - it’s pretty common. I was also on it for several years and was switched to candesartan as I developed a cough.

Go back to your doctor and ask for a review of your medication. There are multiple drugs that can help with hypertension - you need to find the one that suits you personally and only a Dr can advise as he will know your health issues.

I’ve also just started amlodipine but I’m taking it to help with cardiovascular spasms. I’m monitoring my BP as I’m on several drugs which are known to lower BP so we are hoping for no issues.

Thank you forensics fairy. I assumed that the side effects were only experienced when you started Rampiril. When I was prescribed amlopodine I felt terrible but carried on with it for 6 weeks hoping it would get better but it didn't so I stopped it and felt better straight away!

Ramipril was the first drug I was prescribed and it was just before my heart issues serviced so that was all I was on back then for about a year. It took a few months before I finally stopped coughing when they switched it.

Ramipril was the first bp med I was given and it didn't do at all. I ended up with an Aki ( acute kidney injury) and angioedema. I was very ill but couldn't see a doctor as this was during lockdown. I was told to stop it immediately (tel appointment) and thankfully I recovered but it took a while. It's not usual to have this response though and I do seem very sensitive to all the bp meds. There are many who have no problems with it.

Blimey Lulu that was a bad reaction. Hope you gave fully recovered now. We are all different. Take care.

Yes thanks. To be fair, not long after that incident whilst I began to feel increasingly unwell it was eventually discovered I was extremely hypothyroid (TSH in the 00s). Lockdown affected a lot of diagnoses I think. So whether this was part of the problem too ( ie don't give bp meds to an undiagnosed thyroid patient) I can't be sure, but I'm never taking Ace inhibitors again anyway.

I had undiagnosed hypothyroidism, TSH 71 when I was first prescribed ramipril. The hypothyroidism was discovered shortly afterwards (two weeks) when I took a turn for the worse with heart /TIA symptoms. I don't have any side effects from ramipril, whether it accelerated my funny turn, I can't say. However I've been in both levothyroxine and ramipril for two years now, with great improvement in my health and good tolerance of both meds. I think it really is an individual reaction to whether you get common symptoms or not. Mrsmr - Good luck with your treatment, I understand there are many other options so hopefully one is the right one for you :)

I had this cough with rampiril. It's a known side effect. I changed meds and the cough disappeared. Have a chat with your GP as it's annoying. Good luck.
