Fed up with Hypertension

I have lived with what's known as essential Hypertension for 29 years. I have had lots of investigations medically but to no avail, I appear to just have it genetically. What's always worried me is that despite being on a raft of medication my blood pressure only goes down an hr after I've taken said medication but by 4pm it's extremely high again. I find it annoying and worrying and have often wondered if its my endocrine system although apparently my tft is normal.

Current Meds

Lisinopril 80mg per day

Nicardipine 120mg per day

Bisoprol 10mg per day

Frusemide 40mg per day

Minoxidil 15mg per day

Just fed up with BP and never feeling great.

This looks like one for the cardiologists rather than us normal mortals. But it might be worth chatting to your pharmacist as they are trained in drug inter-reactions. And you might think about taking your meds before bedtime?

Hello, Definitely get another opinion. Like the other reply said, us mere mortals are just the patients! But I would be inclined to go to to

Someone completely new, to try a different strategy.

Good look with it all, it’s so difficult

Hi Dazkil. I agree with the other two comments, have a chat to either a pharmacist or another GP if you can. Good luck. x

That's five different classes of meds, with the last two potent according to Dr. Google.

But, you are not on an ARB which is popular these days because it has less side effects.

Is it the same doctor prescribing them? If so, You might want to get another opinion. Also to get. handle on things, you might want to look up the different classes and their side effects.

You do not state how high your blood pressure is.

I've also been on BP meds for 27 years. I have found that running and healthy eating really helps keep the BP stable. The other thing which affected my BP was a B12 deficiency,. As soon as that was treated with injections for life, my BP stabilised again and I feel better than I did in my 20's. I know how awful that dragging tiredness is and I hope you find something to help.

Hi, I can sympathise as I am also on a cocktail of six different drugs and feel like crap all the time with many of side effects listed in the fact sheets. I have been on BP medication for over 30yrs and was stable on a couple of medications. back in 2019 I was starting to get breathless and had some chest discomfort which my GP practice thought was angina though I had a feeling it wasn't. I have had MRI scans which showed some slight stenosis in the tiny arteries feeding oxygen to my heart. My GP put me on an additional drug. I went for a stress echocardiogram where they inject stuff to make your heart work harder and see if that caused the chest discomfort. Well I exceeded the dose of the two drugs they give you and didn't get the discomfort. The cardiologist who did the test said my heart was working fine and concluded the discomfort was gastro related and recommended two further drugs which my GP duly put me on. One of these is supposed to be for short term use and you should be monitored yet 3 months later I'm still on it. I have tried several times to convince my GP practice to remove or at least reduce the dosage of some of these meds to no avail. I have not had a face to face consultation since 2019 when this all started and am rapidly loosing trust in the GP service. I have a BP monitor which I use every week or so and for a long time my BP has averaged 128/72 with a heart rate of 50. I know some people advise talking to a pharmacist, but unless they are able to alter my meds I don't see the point. They would probably only refer me back to the practice like going round in circles.

They might well refer you back to the practice - but with some informed opinion. In the UK that is a. Or al job for the pharmacist to do. Clearly you’re not getting what you need from, the medics so another approach is advisable,
