Amlodipine BP now worse help! Sensitive to BP meds any advice?

Mum just been prescribed amlodipine 5ml after one dose and now BP is worse, breathing and headaches.

She is 70yrs Type 2 diabetes and need to take vit C and B everyday. She is very sensitive to medicine and can only take half aspirin for pain relief. She has lost weight and eats healthy and exercises but is stressed.

Does anyone have experience or knowledge what BP medication would be better for her as she has tried so many that she reacts to.

Zoe, has your Mum tried Losartan Potassium for her blood pressure? For me, Amlodipine proved one of the worst and Losartan one of the best as far as side effects are concerned - my body, too, is super sensitive to meds.

Also, has she tried eating daily ‘live’ unsweetened yoghurt for the colitis?

I'm type 2, IBS and CKD, there appears to be a few of us who have medication reactions more than most. I get quite ill with amlodipine and a lot of other BP meds I have tried.

I have just started doxazosin and although the side effects seem minor on the fact sheet, time will tell. Two days into it.

I get tired of constantly feeling ill from drugs and wonder if just being left alone is not better.

This all increases my stress levels which compounds my health issues.

Has she tried a chat with her pharmacist?

Such a worry Zoe, mum's are precious. I don't get on particularly well with Amlodipine but tolerate it because it's the only one that works for me. I've had such bad side effects from the others that the doctors gave up a few years ago then started pushing me a year ago to try again. I know there are a couple of new ones out but don't know what they are or anything about them. Good luck.

I didn’t get on with blood pressure tablets. Kept telling gp but either, increased them or changed them. Then I was admitted to hospital and the a and e consultant said there was something really wrong with my blood pressure and please see gp ASAP. Went back to gp and he took me off all of them and I had a 24 hour monitor put on. Result= didn’t need BP meds at all 🤷‍♀️ Please go back to gp

I was taking a inhaler, which certainly didn’t agree with me, and my blood pressure spiked, went back to gp and he increased meds, then changed them, and that’s when I landed in a and e . Also had a heart monitor at some time too. Think the 24 hour monitoring helps immensely

My wife became very ill from side effects after being prescribed Ramipril, Clopidogrel and Bisoprolol. Thankfully, her BP is now controlled well by Lercanidipine, a calcium channel blocker. She also takes Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor which inhibits stomach acid.

Interestingly I have been having problems with Doxazosin. The fact sheet I received with it indicated no real side effects. On further searching I found there are some side effects that aren't too pleasant. Seems like a lot of the problems I'm having can be attributed to the drug and they are the more uncommon side effects. Wouldn't you know it, another drug on the don't touch list!

Is running the risk of stroke greater than the constant body pain and constipation? A choice I'm going to have to make soon. Meantime I will continue the course of Doxazosin to give it a full trial, but can't wait to see the end of it.

The end came quicker than expected with my kidney function down 10 points and some of my other results are low. An immediate stop to BP meds. I can't afford the damage to my kidneys whereas my high BP has been with me for over 20 years and I'm still going strong. Well sort of! Ended up with pain through the arms across the back and into the neck, along with through the back of my waist. Dizziness, constipation , more than usual, losing my voice and itchy. The BP meds didn't make any real difference to my BP to boot, I will keep monitoring it though. No point in waiting for a nasty surprise to pop up.
