gout issues

Hi all, After my first GP led health check health check at 68 years old i was advised that i had high blood pressure, high chlosterol, and was in the obese range using the BMI index.

I dont smoke,I play golf twice a week and walk 10,000 steps a day minimum.I had never had gout.

After three weeks of Amlodipine(10 mg) my blood pressure did seem to reduce slightly but one morning I woke up with an incredibly sore big toe (on my left foot only.)Within a couple of days i was struggling to walk without a limp.

After a visit to my GP i was prescibed Colchicine(3 days only),which helped enormously but I still have a sore foot when walking two weeks later.

I asked the GP if the Amlodipine had caused the gout in the first place as before taking it I never had a problem with gout, but he dismissed it saying there was no link.

Has anyone on this site had a similar problem?

Thanks for any comments.......

May I ask what are the exact symptoms of your sore big toe?

I got a severe pain in my left big toe a few months ago. I am on Amlodipine 5mg.

However it is not gout-- no swelling or inflammation.

X-ray showed no break or fracture.

The toe looks perfectly normal and it is impossible to reproduce the symptom -- like a razor blade being drawn across it?

I'm thinking it may be neuropathic or tenosynovitis --- ligament or nerve damage.

If Amazon did a DIY amputation kit ,I would get it promptly!😝

Hi , Sorry to hear about the pain, sounds awful. My symptoms are localised swelling and acute tenderness, thought it was a bunion at first but Doctor ruled that out.Painful to wear shoes and even slippers! After limping around for a few days went back to doc who prescribed Colchicne which were effective after a few days but im still limping, just not as painful. Im interested in if theres a link with the blood pressure meds as it seems very coincidental that the gout arrived shortly after taking the meds, considering i had never had gout before!

Hope you get sorted....without the amputation😜

Thank you for that information.

Yes-- very different to what I have.

I hope you get sorted soon.

All the best.

Hi CobraG425. I've been on Amlodipine 5 mg for five years now and whilst initially I had swollen feet, ankles and lower legs, I didn't have gout. Have you checked the PIL that is in the box to see if it's under the side effects listed?

Hi Springcross,Thanks for the reply.I have checked and its not listed as a side effect.Doctor didnt rule it out comletely though but he has dropped dosage from 10mg to 5mg so Im interested if anybody else had theit first gout attack after taking Amlodipine?

a painful toe might be totally coincidental.

For example, I have “hallux rigidus” which is a posh way of saying that my big toes don’t bend. It’s very painful but on the advice of my chiropodist I take glucosamine with chondroitin which is very helpful - takes a few days to work. She, the chiropodist, asked me to have gout excluded, which I did.

Funnily enough ..yes. I hadn't linked mine with amlodipine but it had been around the time I was on amlodipine. I'm still on Allopurinol because the pain I had was chronic. I still get sore toes and fingers and have been off the amlodipine for several years now. I'm now wondering!!

Thanks for the reply Sue6666,Im off to the doctors on wednesday for blood test results to see what i can use going forward..Im thinking he will suggest Allopurinol but will take up the amlodipine issue with him again....

I would ask for blood tests to confirm gout and also check kidney function. Gout is generally caused by the kidneys not being able to filter the urine acid from your system . The BP meds might have affected your kidneys. There a plenty of other BP meds you can switch to if this continues
