Hi Cathy. I took Amlodipine 5 mg for seven months (stopped about a month ago) but never experiened excessive thirst. That doesn't mean to say it's not one of the side effects - have you checked the side effects on the leaflet to see if that's mentioned. Someone else will probably come on and answer soon so keep checking.

I have been on this med for about 6 years and have not had any signs of excessive thirst. I used to take it around 9 a.m. I take a combination tablet of it with perindopril. My bp has stayed very stable around 120/72 range during these years. I have had an increase in patches of eczema and sleeplessness. Recently I switched to 11 p.m to take the meds along with the statin. I find I sleep better because I dream less. This may or may not be related to the tablets. I find it is impossible to get confirmation that new condition are, or are not related to the drug,, Maybe the doctors are afraid of being sued, who knows, but I would certainly consult my doctor regarding the excessive thirst because of the fear of diabetes. I am 76.

If you go on the drugs.com site, the "rare" section will have thirst as a side effect.

It has been written that high blood pressure meds are best taken at night, but I am not an MD, so pass that by your GP.

Drugs.com says that 10 mg Amlodipine is the highest dose. You might want to have that dose lowered and see if you still have the thirst.

Latest trials have concluded that combo therapy (more than one drug at a lesser dose) is a better practise than monotherapy ( one drug on a higher dose) because there should be less side effects. Again, I am not an MD.
