I’ve had bladder trouble for about 12 months starting off with couple of water infections given antibiotics but since then feel like I have permanent cystitis the feeling you need a wee but you don’t no burning when having a wee but the unusual thing is when I’ve had a wee after the pain starts for a while usually later at night it feels like in my urethra weird sensation had a few phone consultations with doctor he gave me medication for over active bladder didn’t do anything, gave me vagifem which helped with soreness but not this thing after wee now he’s put me on low dose antibiotics doesn’t seem to be helping he’s referring me to urologist but got wait 6 months I’m taking d mannose as well anyone please tell me what this might be and if you have anything similar it’s making me so miserable and hate not knowing what it is .

Hi von66, are you still having bladder trouble? I've got very similar symptoms as you had . I've been troubled by what I thought was cystitis since July. No amount of antibiotics helped. Pain was constant and couldn't really go anywhere because constantly going to the loo. Naproxen was the only thing that helped almost eliminating all the pain. I had to have a steroid injection because I have arthritis and it seems to have helped the bladder pain too. My doctor thinks I could have bladder inflamtion rather than infection, which is why the anti-inflammatory meds are helping me and antibiotics dont. She has also sugested D mannose. I have waited 5 months to get a phone call from urology in November! I hope you have found something to eliviate your symptoms.

Same I have to wait till March for an appointment with urologist terrible isn’t it , did the antibiotics for a month didn’t help the pain at all so stopped them he given me solifenacin now to try it’s more for an overactive bladder I don’t think that’s what mine is so not holding out too much hope I’m taking d mannose and just ordered some cranberry tablets see if that helps I think you need a proper diagnosis before you can treat it but just got to wait for these appointments I suppose .

I hope the new meds work for you. I would be interested in how you get on with them. I've read differing opinions on cranberry. Some people swear by it but others say drinking the juice makes it worse.

Just a thought - ask for the urine sample to have an extended culture for 48 hours. If it’s negative ask that it is sent back. Explain that you are in a lot of pain and think you have a more complex infection.

My result comes back almost weekly saying I have an infection but if it’s not an extended culture it comes back negative and I don’t get antibiotics! Then it gets really bad. This even happened in hospital for a week and no one would listen to me when I was saying that it needed to be retested, they kept getting fresh samples and false negatives.

This also happens to an elderly relative who gets very ill from sepsis (he has other health complications but the UTI sets him off). The nurses look at him and say “we know you have a UTI but it’s all coming back negative” then they do an extended culture it comes back positive then give him antibiotics and he’s much better!

Hi, can I ask if you are in the UK and using the NHS? I've never heard of an extended culture and it's certainly never been mentioned or offered to me.
